Do you use different weights for piecing and quilting? I have just ordered lots of the 50wt, but I'm wondering if the 40wt would be better for machine quilting.
I use the 50wt for both piecing and quilting and have never had any issues. About the only thing that I have noticed while using the 50wt for quilting is that depending on the thread color/fabric combo, the quilting doesn't show much definition. Not a big deal for me tho.

I use Superior threads, King Tut, Masterpiece and Bottom Line. I also like Mettler Silk Finish. And I use YLI Soft Touch for piecing.

I got two different recommendations. From the LQS Bottom Line 60wt polyester but when I took quilting classes from the QS I purchased my sewing machine from I was told to use Mettler silk finish, 100% cotton 50wt.

I piece with Aurifil (it's low lint).
I machine applique applique with YLI Silk 100 (If I don't want it to show) or Aurifil wool (if I want it to show).
I quilt with whatever thread looks best - mostly King Tut, but I will use silk for a very special quilt.
For the bobbin of my longarm I love Fil-Tec prewound bobbins (they are made with Glide brand polyester thread).
For machine embroidery I usually use Isacord, sometimes use silk, and every now and again I use Oliver Twist.
I thread paint with Sulky.

I quilt on my LA with King Tut, Rainbow, Halo, Razzle Dazzle, So Fine and Bottom Line, all by Superior. I use all on top and always use Bottom Line in my bobbin. King Tut is extra long staple Egyptian cotton so it rarely breaks with quilting. Both So Fine and Bottom Line are poly and are awesome. It you go to Superior Thread's website they have a tab called "education" where Bob will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about thread! I also use his metallic thread and glitter when I want sparkle. For piecing I use MasterPiece...thin enough to not interfere with my scant quarter inch!

It depends on how much you want the quilting thread to show. The 40wt threads show more then the 50 or 60wt threads, but if you are doing micro work, you want 60-100wt so you can get your stitch lines close together without them running together like a 40 or 30wt thread would. I like 50wt for piecing because it is thin enough not to bulk up the seams but strong enough to hold together well.
