OK. Thanks CoyoteMagic - love the pictures. I'm definitely a visual thinker! Now I get it. I like these & now see the value of the small blocks that I have previously just given away - I had no idea what to do with them! lol. Sometimes I'm such a dummy... I get so focused on everything matching

When I've made I Spy quilts, I use the snowball block. Just more fun and always pairs. Use juvinele prints. One time I goofed and and one set of three...now that was a hoot!

Check out the Missouri Star Quilt Company web site. they have a tutorial for a nice I Spy quilt. I recently purchased a layer cake by Benartex with 40 different fabrics. It should be enough for two quilts.

I had some girls (9 and 11) here and they were helping me tie some basic 4" block charity quilts. They started doing it automatically--look at the unicorn, look at the clown, look at the ....

This is an eye spy quilt I just finished for my granddaughter. There is also a pic of the back. I used different sizes of 6 inch wide fabrics.

The pattern doesn't matter. Just many different theme fabrics to be able to play the game "I Spy". Usually, they are made with novelties. The more different things to find, the better. I love it when the quilter puts "I Spy...." in the borders. It really brings it together! They are especially great for young ones that are sick....gives them somewhere to focus their attention rather than thinking about being sick.

I love the one Jenny Doan did on Missouriquiltco.com or UTube. Its little canning jars filled with things to SPY.

The first I Spy quilts were designed by Possibilities and were featured on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson. They had hexagons joined together with triangles filling in. It was patterned in their book P.S. I Love You Two, published in 1992. In the narrow inner border, they machine embroidered the words I Spy, and then named an image for the child to look for. Since then, other people have taken that idea and designed other quilts, but they have the same intent.
