Not sure about USA, but in the uk my dealer explained that some of the internet dealers are selling 'grey' machines. These are machines intended for the far eastern market, with different voltages someof them are not even genuine manufacturers machines and that is why uk dealers will not touch them with a barge pole.

I just bought my Janome 2 weeks ago from a dealer that is 3 hours away, one way. I had never had the Janome brand so I wanted to try before I bought. I asked the dealer about the 300 dollar difference (less on the internet) & he told me the internet machines did not come with as many accessories. Also, that in store dealers did not have to service machines bought off the internet. I was afraid to buy from the internet and then if anything was wrong, would possibly have no recourse. I live too far away to take advantage of any free classes, but I do feel more assurance that if anything goes wrong, I do have someone to take it to.

There are several machines that Janome does not permit to be sold on the internet; usually their latest and greatest. I purchased my home machine at a local dealer (although not the one closest to me because they are awful!) but for my class machine (a 3160 QDC) I purchased online and have been very happy. My dealer will service any machine but will only do warranty repairs on machines purchased from them. I have no problem with that and wouldn't expect them to do otherwise.
Love my Janomes!

i work in a fabric shop that sells sewing machines. i can purchase a sewing machine on line cheaper than what the shop sells it for. main reason. if something goes wrong w/the on line machine (brother), i have to pack it up and send it back to brother. if something goes wrong w/the one i purchase at the fabric shop, i bring it into the shop and say here fix it. the shop is authorized to fix the machine. i can take as many classes at my local shop as i need for learning that sewing machine. i dont have the support on line. so bottom line is support your local shop. i wouldnt want to have to ship back a sewing machine to any manufacturer. i'd rather put it in my car and drive to the shop.

I bought my Janome 3050DC on line. At the time they were selling for $750.00, I got mine brand new shipped from the warehouse for $400.00, no taxes and no shipping. I bought it from a Janome dealer on line. I was already familiar with this machine, my sister has one, and I had used hers. Its a great machine. This is the time of year I bought mine, so there are probably good deals to be had out there, as it's the end of the year.

Customer service and support, classes. You get to try the machine out, you may love Janome's already but like cars, each is different and should be test driven. A good local connection is at the top of the list as to how important it is.
If you have to return the machine you will probably have to pay return shipping too, rather its to be fixed or to get a refund. Not all companies will accept paying for the return shipping fees.
