What response are you really looking for?

I would certainly want an honest response to help me improve my work skills and choices.
saying something like, "I like the pink border better than the blue one.", isn't really helpful. Why is the pink better, what quality does the pink bring to the quilt that blue doesn't.
In all my years of quilting it has been my experience that most people are afraid to actually make a decision and want more than anything to not be responsible for their choices because most of us have never been taught to be analytical or have confidence. The majority of people are stifled from a very early age. It starts when we are old enough to make choices like which hand to write with and constantly being told no by every adult in a child's life.
It builds until we can't even put two colors together and say yes, it works.
My creed is to try to unlearn everything I was fed in school and find my own way through. I have never been happier than when I make my own decisions.
Sorry for the long rant. It seems to be near to my heart.
peace

This ia my classroom...this is where I learn and this is where I hope I get honest, informed critiques and advice so that I can expand my skill set, knowledge and problem solving confidence. And I hope that on ocassion I can reciprocate by giving valued opinion and advice.

I'm looking for an honest opinion. Helpful suggestions since I have only been quilting for a short time. I rather hear the truth then find out later it was all wrong. I realize that with time and hard work quilting improves but sometimes there are tricks to the trade that experienced quilters know. Yes, I want to be told the truth.

i would rather make a new quilt than pick one apart so i would never ask what to do :-( .
if i ask how to fix something though i would sure hope for a constructive reply. i would be looking for information on ways to correct my mistake. i would ask for colour help when working with colours that just aren't ones i love and would hope for an honest opinion and or constructive suggestions to improve the colour scheme.
please don't stop helping people with true thoughts and ideas, i come here to learn.

I always try to be honest without being ugly. I have made suggestions that they "quilter" find an LQS or quilt guild in their area or check with YouTube for tutorials. I always want to be encouraging and many times I read the responses from other quilters so I can learn also. IMHO

I am from the school of "It's how you say things". Pose your thoughts asking us our opinions, give your own thoughts on what you think of your project; but if you 'sincerely' want to know what 'we' would do with 'your' work, ask us "What would 'you' do?" I think many do just that, and as we all are our own creative person, those who respond are being honest. I agree with many responses to your thread, especially Genden. I don't have other quilters or sewers in my family or circle of friends. I choose not to belong to groups or guilds, etc. So like many others, I don't always see or know what a good solution is, and that is a great reason to keep logging in to the Board.

Colors tend to be more personal, but you can express value since it can be seen with a red viewer.
"X machine isn't stitching right" - plenty of posts about how your machine of that brand doesn't do it. Has nothing to do with quilter's choice of machine. All machines can make a mess. That's why they need humans to sort it out. Any machine company can put out a lemon. People tend to criticize the company rather than just the machine.
Those that do suggest tutorials and helpful posts are among the best. Any post that starts with "I certainly wouldn't do it that way" or the like is just an opinion unless they do back it up with a good tutorial or post so you can see why. Otherwise, it's mostly useless except as an opinion if the answer to the question isn't understood.
If you can see both sides of an answer, give them. It does help.

I think we are looking for a suggestion for the 'fix", but at the same time I think we are looking for validation that we aren't the only one that has made that mistake. If a mistake is obvious, I don't think we are looking for anyone to say to just leave it like it is. We learn from one another by being told how to correct these mistakes
