I keep squares 1-1/2" or larger...in 1/2" increments up to 5" and I save strips from 1-1/2" up to 3".

I save alot of scraps for doll clothing that I make for the DGD's 18" dolls. Love to just sew them together and then make an outfit (mostly alike colors, once in a while I get a wild hair and mix it up !LOL) ..they turn out so cute. I usually don't save anything smaller than 1" for the clothing, the rest goes in a bin for stuffing different items as well as a dog bed for my Avatar or the other dogs in the family when I make them.

If it is smaller than a fat quarter, I cut it into 5" squares, or 2 1/2" squares. If it is a narrow strip, but WOF, a 2 1/2" strip. Anything smaller I put in a pillowcase and save for a gal in our guild who makes animal shelter beds.
I get too overwhelmed if I have a lot of unorganized scraps.

Unfortunately I keep almost everything. I do a lot of applique so when I have a 1" sq of a beautiful yellow, I always think daisy center, etc. Consequently, I have a LOT of scraps and I just can't bring myself to dispose of them. I am in the process of reorganizing my scraps. I did sort by color, but that is very time consuming, I am going to a system of light, medium, dark and stripes/plaids. I don't precut anything.

It depends on the fabric and what it was to work with. One thing I do save is; any thread that is long enough to tack a few stitches.

Wow! Thanks for more ideas--as if I didn't have enough on my bucket list!! I have been working on a controlled scrappy asian top, and because I like the fabrics so much, actually sorted thru the garbage can and pulled out anything 1 1/2 inches or larger. Thinking about just holding on/adding to until I have enough for a couple of throw pillow tops.

I am new to the site and notice that many abbreviations are used. Is there a dictionary or someone that can tell me what all of these mean? Re: DH and HST. Of course there are many more, which I can't remember right now.

After reading this I went and made 7 dog toys...My small scraps were over flowing..I just filled one garage bag full....I think I just may donate it to the local guild...my sewing room looks a bit better...I either need to get my butt moving and get some scrappy quilts or toys and reorganise or get rid of more. I am really not liking the mess of it all.

I save everything. those tiny pieces often work in applique or paper piecing. You did remind me to go through my scrap box and do some organizing. Happy Mother's Day to all
