toverly,
Could your fil have a touch of dementia? His actions aren't normal.....or is he just an odd duck? I don't blame you for saying "No" to more quilts.

Wow, some of these stories are definitely heartbreaking to a quilter. But as it goes to say, once it's given it no longer belongs to us. And I thought my FIL had done me a disservice Christmas. He had hinted at wanting a quilt. So I made one in his college colors of all things (it's what he also hinted to wanting). Well, Christmas day he opened it and plopped it on the floor next to his chair. He hasn't touched it since. It is still sitting next to his chair on the floor. He didn't even open it to see the pattern. It's in his living room that we never go into except on Christmas, still on top of the Christmas paper. Now he has asked me to do two baby quilts for the waitress who waits on him at IHOP. Really? The nerve. I said No to that one.

I can't imagine how you must have felt. That would be heart breaking. The closest I got to something that awful was an afghan I made for my brother when he got married and shortly after that I saw it used as a dog bed inside.

My Mom made my two granddaughters a quilt when they were quite young..bless her heart they were both made with scraps of all kinds of fabric..they were 5" squares...batting was cotton...and she tied them..Now the girls are 25 and 27..and my daughter just gave me both of them to repair.. because those granddaughters loved their quilts more than anything...I had to repair lots of the 5" blocks..and took all the cotton batting out that was all wadded up in the corners..and thin in lots of places...put a new lining on them and retied them...Now they can have another 20 years with their quilts..my mom would be so proud...we lost her in 2004 at 93 yrs old..and I have many of her quilts today...I just hope they love the ones I have made them as much...after they get another 20 yrs older...

What horror stories! I feel for you all. I have always done crafts of some sort but not quilts until recently. I did cross stitch, plastic canvas and various hand crafts. I gave a lot to my MIL and Mother with two different results.
My MIL never used any of the things I did for her. When she went into a nursing home and we cleaned out her house all the things I had labored over were put away in her closet good as new. I never knew if she didn't like what I made or treasured them. Of course I took every last thing back and use a lot of the things in my home today. My FIL did use an afghan I made to take a nap (extra long) and loved it. My MIL actually kept it out in her livingroom.
My mother, on the other hand, gave everything away (made by me and family stuff) that I treasured before she died. I got nothing back.
I have since done quilts for my grand kids and great grand kids. I tied them all so they are pretty delicate but I thought they turned out great. I really don't ever want to know what has happened to any of them. I'm sure they will land someplace I wouldn't like. -( So... you never know what will happen to things you put your heart and soul into for others! Create, give, forget and create again.

I don't know of the worse thing someone has done to one of my quilts, but, one of my daughters (she who shall not be named) told me after I sent a hand made quilt to one of her daughters, "well, some people like that kind of gift, but gee, spending money for college would have been great".

Ooh, these stories are horrible! I hope one of my quilts NEVER ends up in a doghouse! However, I am also a believer that whenever I give a quilt away, I am no longer in control of how it is used. It belongs to the eventual recipient to use as he or she pleases. To the best of my knowledge, none of my quilts has been misused as some of the others in this thread. I guess the worst thing that happened with one of my quilts was a queen-sized one I made and gave to a local youth support organization for a fundraiser. The quilt was to be auctioned off. It was a very colorful scrappy quilt made in the Cobblestones pattern, and I was very proud of it. I machine pieced it and paid to have it machine quilted. Well, at the fundraiser auction, a man from where I worked and whom I absolutely DETEST purchased it. It made me cringe to think of my quilt ending up on his bed. But my brain said, "let it go, it's his now", and I did. Of course, the $525.00 he paid for that quilt certainly helped ease my mind as that money went to help local schoolkids.

I crocheted a king sized afghan and the recipient then texted me after getting it that it was crooked. No thanks no nothing besides that comment. Last I knew it was being used to protect the end of their couch from cat scratches.
Needless to say now that I'm sewing they will NEVER receive a quilt from me.
