did you layout the blocks? I think that losing the pinwheel on the top and bottom row would be OK. You are not going to have any pinwheel on the edges anyway even if you put a whole block in it. An oblong quilt will let the child grow into it and be able to use it to cover-up with when they are older.

I would make it square. The baby's parents may already have a theme for his bedding, in which case that quilt won't be used in the crib.

I don't think loosing the bottom pin wheel would detract from the beauty of your quilt at all, especially if all your pinwheels have that continuation of color like the yellow above. However if you feel like its to distracting I would go with making it longer that way it fits a bed, drag it around, or it can be displayed. I love your block and I look forward to seeing the finished quilt.
