Here's one I made for a doll quilt swap. The bobbin thread did something peculiar and made the word "always" come out in a different color!

Here is the quilt and label I made for our first grandchild from squares my Mom had cut.

One thing I do is to make sure the label is part of the backing, not just handsewn to it. I will cut out an area, and then 'insert' the label and sew it back in.

This is printed on a Printed Treasures fabric sheet using the computer printer.

I make mine on Printed Treasures Iron in fabric sheets. Tried others, this fades the least. Here are a few samples. I choose the graphic to go with the quilt. I have scanned from a book of labels and colored them in the computer.

I hand embroider my labels as it seems a shame not to on a hand quilted quilt. Once you get into the swing of it it really doesn't take that long. I write it in word, print it out & trace it onto the piece of fabric using a water soluble pen:

Also on a side note I thought I'd share this - I hand stitched the wedding date into the lining of the wedding dress for the friend that this wedding quilt was for. It was her 'something blue' & makes the dress truly personal. Also I used the same font for the label, the date & the border quilting (which said dum vivis ama - love as long as you live), as she had used in the invitations & save the date's. Lets say it won me MAJOR friend points!!!

Just to let you know Sharpie now has a fabric pen. It is a Sharpie "Rub a Dub". I found them at Wal Mart two for under $2. Makes great hand lables for your items.
