I've even seen some black lately in baby quilts--not that I would do it.

Yes. I think that purple, green, yellow etc. can all be used in either boy or girl quilts.

I don't believe in gender coding with color... my boys have liked pink and purple on and off, finally settling firmly into blue and green as their "favorite" colors. I wonder how much of that has to do with cultural exposure? To me, it is an awful things to to do to a child, rob them of enjoyment of color based on gender stereotypes. Sighhhhh.... I must be cranky staying up so late = )

All things considered, I'd ask your daughter her opinion. Go for it if she is comfortable with it.

ETA: or maybe I'm just cranky because my oldest son constantly thinks I will like something because it is pink. And I am a girl, so pink must be my favorite color... at least that is what he is taught at school. It doesn't matter how I try to explain, he is 100% certain I love pink. I'm just lucky he cares what I like at all = )

ETAA: or maybe I'm just plain old cranky...

Yes, but depends if it goes with the other colors you're using. My DH is a purple lover.

I'd say it depends on the baby's father's viewpoint. Some dads don't like purple for their boys, some don't care ;)

I agree....
I was given a quilt at my baby shower (22 years ago), made from a pre-print....mostly mice on blues and pinks. My son has always treasured it. I don't think the color has anything to do with it in his case. For him it's more about how it came to be his. If I was making a baby quilt for a boy, I wouldn't shy away from purple at all. Of course my response is so late, you've probably finished the quilt by now! Congratulations on the new addition to the family!
