If we outlaw blocks it would be like telling beginners they cannot swap and this swap is open to all skill levels. We encourage people to try new blocks in this swap but do not discourage them from doing any particular one.[quote/]

I understand that all skill levels are encouraged, however we are ALL Here to help each other and if you can do a 9patch you can do a friendship star! Some times those "comfort" zones are like walls...hard to get past without a helping hand!

[quote=lovingIzabella]As far as buying "normal" colors again this is a personal preference thing. A normal color for me is orange, I know this is not the case for most people though. And buying base colors like blue, green, brown while not a bad idea who knows if they will be used or not. Everyone's color palette is so different which is one of the things that makes this swap so much fun. It encourages us all to step out of the comfort of those "safe" colors and try something maybe we normally wouldn't buy. [quote/]

I only listed "normal" colors that came to mind, I should have said "blenders" meaning fabrics that are easily read as a color and not as an opposing/contrasting print!

you can use a color wheel to help you shop for blenders if you do not already own any!

In teaching color selection I always have the students pick the 3 colors they are most comfortable with and then directly across the wheel from those colors and find the 3 contrasting colors and tell them to use those instead to help learn more color placement!

Sunday was just a "day" suggestion, I realize that it could be a different day for each person, I am just saying that each person really only needs to post the update once a week on what ever day works for them!

[quote=lovingIzabella] I appreciate any and all input but I want and need everyone to remember that this swap is truly meant for ALL skill levels and aims to try and help people grow. Grow in both block skill and color selection.[quote/]

The way the rules read, it is like we need to post each fabric we send, each fabric we receive, pix of what we sent, pix of what we received, I for one do not have time for all of that. Also while posting all of those pix might be great for getting ideas it just as effective to post a "grouping" of the fabrics/blocks with labels if you like for reference. It is just being considerate to those who can not spend all day trying to read/see everything that gets posted.

If anyone new/old pro alike needs any assistance or has questions, I am always here to help!

I just know that this is FUN but, there are things you can do in order to make the whole process be more fun and exciting while learning a thing or two!

I have truly learned a lot about quilting in the 6 months I've been on this board. Swapping and trying new blocks and getting advice is a great way to learn.

But, my opinion only, I think one of the problems is that the inexperienced quilters try to do something beyond their skill set. Yes, I too would like to outlaw the 9-patch, but know it isn't fair to do so, April. But if one is inexperienced, they shouldn't try to do a complicated paper piecing or a multi-seamed pieced block. And the biggest error of all is NOT MEASURING the block when one has completed sewing. You cannot tell me that they didn't know the block was undersized whn they sent it out!

Hi,
I'm trying to understand how your swap works. How d you make a 12.5 inch block when the fat quarter is only 18 x 11?

I guess I'm too new at this to understand.
Thanks for your help.

You use their fabric as the focus fabric and add some of your fabric to it.

April: I love this swap!!!! I think it is my favorite. I love ALL of the blocks I received in Boomerang 4.0. The plain ones are just as special to me as the complicated ones. Your swaps are very successful and everyone can't wait to be included. THANKS for hosting this swap and all of the hard work you put into this. I am soooooo happy to be in 5.0.

I am sending you and our angel Izzy a BIG HUG!!

Blessings!

Carole

Before Boom 4 I hadn't sewn any blocks and I was nervous, but once I started it became easier and easier. Thank you for hosting this swap which allowed me to stretch outside my comfort zone. I have learned so much from participating in this swap.

I agree that people should not take on blocks way beyond their skillset but we all have to grow and stretch and learn. I am always open to help with any advice. We should always measure our blocks before sending and make sure they meet the 12.5" criteria. It is very hard to work a block that is too small (and sometimes cutting one that is too big looses the feel of the block).

Posts do not have to be made every day for when fabrics are received it is just a guideline to say please be courteous and post the names of those you receive from. You can make it a lump posting-just remember to let people know so they don't worry that something got lost.
Also you do not have to post pictures of completed blocks-that is for the owner of the block to do when they get it home and again it can be done in a large grouping but we do not want people to worry that something they worked on got lost in the mail so courtesy dictates we post we received something from someone.

At this point I have 6 members doing two swaps so in theory that means we have 58 swappers ready to go :-)

Carole I will notate you would do 2 if need be-thanks so much!
Hugs
