it's mostly an orginial just doodling with egg shapes and at first it was going to wave a sign in one hand but when tilted it reminded me of swimming and I searched through my water fabrics and presto-Breast Stroke and I lived in FL for 30 yrs so the shark showed up. Moosegirl

I kinda copied Lisa773's chicken, I like that shape for the chicken .... I hope you guys like it. I'm not sure if the striped chicken is too busy with the background....

Rachel

Love this one!!!

sandpat 02-17-2010 06:04 AM

Its really a cutie isn't it???

I loved the "Breast Stroke" chicken and was trying to think of another funny chicken theme, so I came up with the road idea. :) I think I am going to make 2 batches of my road chickens, one with the zebra and one with the polka dots, I hope that's okay. I think we have more than 12 partcipants. And if we don't some of them can come back home with me. :) :)

sandpat 02-17-2010 05:03 PM

Well Rachael, so far we have 25 signed up....to do 50 sets....so even if they don't all come "home" to roost...we will have more than enough that you probably won't get but 1 or your 12 back.

jljack 02-17-2010 09:54 PM

Hope it's OK, since I see someone else also doing this block, but I'll be doing Flappin....I just have to pick wacky fabrics for them!!!

LovingIzabella 02-18-2010 05:26 AM

Patti,
IF and that is IF (I must be crazy lol but it feels so good to sew again!) I did signup how many blocks would I need to make to get one of each that is made back?
Hugs
April

sandpat 02-18-2010 05:54 AM

Jljack....even IF someone makes the same block, it won't matter....all the fabrics are different..they are ALL fun and since the sets are small, the chances of a dup are really tiny.

April....when I counted the list on the activities page last night, I counted 50 sets...so its kinda of hard to say. The sets are only 6 each, so I can't guarantee that you will get 1 of each...there are a few people who are trying...but if there are more than 5 who make that many...ummm.....it won't workout in my teeny tiny brain.

Karen 02-18-2010 07:29 AM

HI Patti! I am making a 4th set of 3.5 blocks! I just can't help myself! I am addicted to chickens!

I used to do a very similar swap for scrapbooking and I know it can be hard to work this one out, your best plan is to line everything up and just go down the rows ….. LOL Easier said than done! I won’t complain if I end up with a bunch of my own blocks back, I know it’s hard enough to swap these ….. But I think those of us sending a lot of chickens will just end up with a lot of each other’s blocks!! :) Which is fine by me!

If I haven’t already said it, thanks so much for organizing this swap, I know how hard it is to swap this style of swap (much easier to do a 12 participant, make 12 blocks type), so THANK YOU!! I really look forward to seeing my whole flock once everything is done and swapped!

(Oh and if you are in the New England area, I’d be happy to come by and help you herd the chicks ….. :))

Cheers!
Rachel

You are right the more we have of one pattern the better I am only making six of each

sew cornie 02-18-2010 09:33 AM

76 and counting, those are great! I'm especially happy to see Flappin. He's my favorite pattern.

Karen 02-18-2010 04:31 PM

76 those are awesome chickens!

Going back through the pages and checking out all these great chickens is really exciting! WOW! What a fantastic hen house these blocks are gonna make! I am thinking of designing a barn quilt and filling it with chicks! Maybe through in a cow and a horse!

I really hope not to get my own back because I made myself one of each. Being my first swap I didn't realize that could happen....oh well they can go into a matching floorquilt!

MadeinMaine 02-18-2010 04:40 PM

Great funky chickens from 76! Love 'em.

sandpat 02-18-2010 06:36 PM

Athena...thats what my plan is....lay them all out and then recruit DH to guide and direct...he is very good at that!

76...those are great looking chickens..I love your fabs...

Tues....Your chickens flew in today!!!! They are all great! I'll take pics of the entire flock when they are all in...I can't wait to see them all!

Are most people going to be laying these out as a hen house in their final design?

I've got a fabric to use for this which I really like, but dont want to cut up too much. I was toying with the idea of surrounding it with a wood effect fabric and making it into a henhouse block, but then it may result in a hen house in a hen house in some people quilts?

Otherwise if I post a picture of the fabric can I get suggestions for what to do...

We'd love to see your fabric!! I plan on just abutting the blocks next to each other and fitting them in together like a puzzle. I'll make my own blocks to fill in where I need to as well. I think sashing them would be too hard since they are gonna be all different sizes.

Cheers!
Rachel

Well this is the Funky Chicken fabric I bought... Just not sure what to do with it. Any suggestions?

athenagwis 02-19-2010 11:32 AM

I like the idea of surrounding that with the wood fabric actually!! I think that would look great, maybe do it in a long rectangle for something different like a 6x9 (6.5x9.5 with seam allowances). I really like that fabric!

Cheers!
Rachel

Karen 02-19-2010 11:40 AM

SuzaB! I really like that fabric!

I thought a barn effect would be really cute with all of those chickens!

SazuBMidlands 02-19-2010 12:04 PM

I'll put them in a house then.
Thats the fabric I couldnt resist and made me join this swap! Seemed so perfect for the Funku Chicken theme :-)

sew cornie 02-19-2010 01:22 PM

Sazu, I love that! It will be a great addition to these funky quilts. Might I ask for more information about it? It has great potential as a border too. I wonder if I could find it stateside.

Quilt4u 02-19-2010 01:24 PM

Those are so cute.

This is one of the hens in my first set.

MadeinMaine 02-20-2010 12:19 PM

Very cute!

76 and counting 02-20-2010 12:28 PM

That is so cute hope i get one did you make up the pattern?

joykey 02-20-2010 02:42 PM

Ok I have been watching this thread, wanting to join, and have decided to just GO for it!!!! I have been playing around with some ideas and think they might be ok. Sorry I don't have a camera to send pix right now.

Quilt4u 02-20-2010 02:43 PM

Very cute.

Karen 02-20-2010 07:25 PM

Countrygirl that is such a cute chicken!!

jljack 02-21-2010 10:39 PM

I am changing the size of my blocks from 12" to 12x24". I found a great pattern, but it's twice as tall!!

Countrygirl 02-22-2010 09:11 AM

I did not have a pattern, I just drew the hen. I am doing three sets and I drew each one of them, the hen, a rooster and a chick. Thank you for the nice comments. I can't wait till we get to exchange them.

MadeinMaine 02-22-2010 03:38 PM

Great job, Countrygirl.

sandpat 02-22-2010 05:17 PM

Yea ladies! Sorry I haven't been around....modem died...but whew..I'm back (hopefully)...But, the good news is that since I had more time...I drew out my chicken blocks to get started. One of them is a hen sitting on a nest of Easter looking eggs and I plan to embroider Fresh Eggs over her head.

Sazu! That fabric is sooo cute! I like the wood grain idea, it would be really cute. I like the fabric for a border too...hmmm...now my brain is whirring..!

Joykey...welcome! I'll add you to the list!

jljack..I'll change your block size too.

Countrygirl...your hen is darling! I love the fabric!

The blocks are starting to come in...and they are SOOO CUTE!!
Darlene...I got your cuties today! (can you tell me your screen name please?)

MadeinMaine 02-22-2010 06:10 PM

Hi, Sandpat - Here's my update:
One 6" set done and picture posted last weekend. I finished one set of 9" chicken blocks this weekend (will try to post picture at some point). I have two sets of 12" block pieces all traced out, ready to fuse and stitch. I have plenty more ideas but time (and LIFE) may limit my abilities    I knew these funky chickens would be so much fun! Could you please update the activity page for my contribution to read:
1 set 6" blocks
1 set 9" blocks
2 sets 12" blocks (fingers crossed :-) )
Thanks.
So excited to see so many, many wild and crazy blocks - just perfect
