This will be a swap for funky chickens. By funky, we mean that it can be a silly pattern, a regular pattern made up in unexpected colors, a great chicken fabric fussy cut....anything that is fun will work for this swap. The intent is to have a great time!

Blocks can be any size that is divisable by 3"....they can be square...or they can be rectangular...

A set will equal 6 blocks...you may make as many sets as you would like to recieve back...for instance, if you make 1 set (6 blocks), you will recieve 6 blocks back.....if you make 2 sets (12 blocks), you will recieve 12 blocks back.

The swap is open to all experience levels.

Blocks should be mailed to me in a ziplock baggie inside an envelope with your name (boardname) on each individual block. You should include a self addressed, stamped envelope for me to send your return blocks. Whatever it costs for you to mail to me is what it will cost for me to mail the blocks back.

Sign-up deadline is 15 Mar 2010. Mail date will be 1 April, 2010.

The activitie link is http://www.quiltingboard.com/group_a...jsp?gracnum=15

Come on ya'll......join the fun!

MistyMarie 01-03-2010 06:24 PM

This sounds like a blast. One point I would like to make, however, is that if someone makes a 3" by 3" block and another person makes a 12" x 12" block, the postage will be quite a bit different because of the weight. I would keep that in mind when sending an envelope.

sew cornie 01-03-2010 09:16 PM

Sign me up please! I love funky chickens. They always make me laugh. How fun it will be to have a whole flock! I'm not sure how many sets yet . . . .

Thanks for setting this up Patti!

amma 01-03-2010 09:58 PM

That is true on the postage.... Maybe send them in a $5.00 priority envelope? Then it will be covered no matter the other sizes....

So and size in increments of 3" plus the 1/2" seam allowance.... I think this will be a fun and interesting swap :D:D:D

sandpat 01-04-2010 05:56 AM

Well...duh...ya'll are right about the postage. Would you all mind sending them in the flat rate priority envelope? Using the flat rate envelope is a great idea. Thanks for looking out for me!

lavandula girl 01-04-2010 06:09 AM

I have a few questions, if you don't mind...

1. Your finished sized would actually be 3 1/2", 6 1/2", etc, right? For a seam allowance?

2. Are the offers intended to be 6 similar blocks?

3. Is there a color scheme we'll all be working from, or is it absolutely anything goes?

I am intrigued...
:D

sandpat 01-04-2010 06:20 AM

Hope you join us Lava..

You will recieve back blocks of probably various sizes...I plan to open the envelopes and go down the row swapping blocks...so it should be a variety..just depends on what comes in.

There is no color scheme per se.....just funky...you will be able to tie them all together when you get them by using a consistant color sashing or another setting type block.

And yes...your finished size will be divisable by 3".....then plus the seam allowance...so 6" would be 6 1/2" if you were doing a square.

crafterbarbara 01-04-2010 06:29 AM

Where do I mail my block? Are 12 1/2 blocks preferred?
This does sound like fun.

If you decide to join us crafter....I will pm you my snail mail addy when you are ready to mail (just let me know)...and 12 1/2" blocks are certainly acceptable...but you can do them any size you would like (that is divisable by 3"). Oh...and remember, a set equals 6 blocks...you must swap at least 1 set. This should be lots of fun!

lavandula girl 01-04-2010 08:46 AM

Alright... PM sent. I'm in for one set of 6 blocks. Do we have to tell you right away what size we're making? Hope not, as I have NO clue right now.

crafterbarbara 01-04-2010 09:08 AM

Ok, I will begin today.

crafterbarbara 01-04-2010 09:25 AM

Do I understand this correct? 6 blocks make a set? A set is needed? And those could be 6/ 3inch blocks? 6/6inch blocks , What if I take 4 r4inch blocks sew together to make a 12 inch block? need 6 of these?

Sorry, I will get this down soon I hope.

MadQuilter 01-04-2010 02:14 PM

I hope everyone is going to post what they plan on doing (size-wise) because I feel a little too vague on the execution.

In the end, you will probably have blocks of a variety of sizes. Your final layout may take some finagling to see how each piece fits together, almost like a tetris puzzle. With the freedom to do squares or rectangle blocks, you won't likely end up with the ability to lay them out in a grid type fashion like as in most of the other block swaps which use all 12" blocks. Does that make sense or did I just confuse the matter more for you?

MadQuilter 01-04-2010 03:40 PM

Thanks Joyce. I understand that part. I would just like to have a better idea if people plan to mix it up or if they pick a specific size, or what.

One of my projects (and I lost the photo) was a group project without rules. Everyone submitted a block and boy were they random. I was the putter-togetherer. It turned out OK but I wish I had a little heads-up.

lavandula girl 01-04-2010 03:47 PM

Well, if it's any help, I'm going to do a matched set, whichever size I do. I won't do 1 6x6, 1 3x12, 1 9x9, etc. But I need to play with my fabric a little, and let the poultry muse speak to me! :-)

MadQuilter 01-04-2010 03:48 PM

the poultry muse - I love it!

MadeinMaine 01-04-2010 04:14 PM

Hi, Sandi, and fellow-chicken-lovers (not livers). I've been looking forward to this swap since the last one. Thanks for heading it up, Sandi. I will PM you with my official intent.
Let the feathers fly!

sandpat 01-04-2010 04:34 PM

Its great that we are getting more folks! OK...just to clarify a bit. When you commit, you are committing to at least 1 set of blocks. 1 set does = 6 blocks. These 6 blocks must be all the same size. If you choose to do a 6 x 6 (and you will always need to add the seam allowance)...then they should ALL 6 be that size...If you choose to do another set...then you can do a different size...OK???

Mad...I think that as people choose what they are going to be doing.....asking them to let us know what size they will be sending if a fine thing to do. Maybe I can post that on the group activity page that I show the link to on Page 1...the opening post. I'll see what I can do. For now....I'll post all the swappers on that group activity list so everyone can see who all is playing. *Edited to say that it appears that I can list people's block sizes on the "public" section on that page.*

Still looking like fun to me!

MadQuilter 01-04-2010 04:38 PM

Thanks for that clarification. I must have had a "chicken with its head cut off" moment (HEY how's that for funky - lol) I THOUGHT that the set of six could be a mix of sizes.

Never mind - all is clear now. Thanks for being patient.

No problem....it might just be tooo confusing if all the sets of 6 were all different...talk about a chicken with its head cut off....here's a great applique block for you....

applique anyone???

So...Mad...does this mean you are joining us?

Don't know yet. I am currently a little overwhelmed with everything I committed to and I think I need to finish something before I add more. Tempting though.....

amma 01-05-2010 01:47 PM

This is going to be an awesome swap!!! I am looking forward to making a quilt with random sized blocks, a first for me :D:D:D

sew cornie 01-05-2010 03:00 PM

Me too . . . I've always wanted to try and this will be a great chance to do so. :D :D

sandpat 01-05-2010 05:48 PM

For those of you wondering what on earth a quilt with different size blocks might look like.....here is a link to marcia's chicken quilt. (I sure hope she doesn't mind me showing it off again).

lavandula girl 01-05-2010 06:06 PM

Okay... I am going to be using some animal prints. I've gotten that far in my thought process. Is there any objection to a large block, like 9x15?

sandpat 01-05-2010 06:16 PM

Nope...no objection....did you see the huge block in Marcia's quilt (shown in the link above)...it looks fabulous! And animal prints???....wow...funky!!!!!

tuesy 01-05-2010 06:24 PM

I love Chickens.. but shhhhhhh don't tell anyone. .. and I think I'd like to join the Chicken swap, but first I need to ask a few questions.:?:

:?: What about using homespun fabric? I know some like it, and others, well not so much.. Would that be ok to use? Either for the base fabric or the chicken itself?
:?: Do we need to tell you what chicken we're doing?
:?: Can it be an ME chicken?
:?: Aren't these questions annoying?
:?: Are the chickens to be exactly alike in each block or can they be different as long as the block size is the same?
:?: Can a rooster also be done with the chickens instead of just a chicken? or is this "hens" only swap?
:?: I'm done with the questions I had, aren't you glad? (ooops, sorry that was a question!)

I'll let you be the judge on the homespun since I don't know alot about it...I would think that if it is objectionable to some...maybe you should use it as part of the chicken and not part of the base??
:?: Do we need to tell you what chicken we're doing? No...just the size of your blocks
:?: Can it be an ME chicken? What is a ME chicken?
:?: Aren't these questions annoying? Getting more sooo
:?: Are the chickens to be exactly alike in each block or can they be different as long as the block size is the same? well, they should be very close...then you can do another set for a different design
:?: Can a rooster also be done with the chickens instead of just a chicken? or is this "hens" only swap? Roosters are always welcome at my hen parties-(its a chicken swap...not a hen swap)
:?: I'm done with the questions I had, aren't you glad? (ooops, sorry that was a question!) :lol:Yippee!...actually, ask away if ya' have anymore....so are you signing up????

lavandula girl 01-05-2010 06:37 PM

Oh boy! Okay... I'm doing 9x15 and animal print will be involved. Also, I can deal with homespun. Doesn't bother me any. :-)

tuesy 01-05-2010 06:38 PM

Thank you for answering all these questions. . Just wanted to make sure I understood everything before I leaped.. no wait, that's a frog..

I'm still thinking about it, but will have to get the chicken I want to do first..have to order the pattern  I can show you the pic if that'd help, but it won't tell you the size I don't think.. at least I can't find it anywhere.

Oooh and ME chicken is Machine Embroidery.. just to lazy to type it all out..

crafterbarbara 01-05-2010 07:52 PM

I love this group..you answered all my questions and I can hardly wait to get in on this fun. Love the quilt shown above.

blueribbontoes 01-06-2010 05:13 AM

Oh, forget it. Count me in. I just spent the last half an hour looking for chicken patterns.
