I am thinking this is a fun block to do... he he... My chicken starts to smell "funky" if I leave it out too long. Does that count?
|
So is there any requirement for the background fabric color?
|
Now that's funny.

BRT...I was wondering how you would get ALL the blocks! ;) Misty...now that block is one my DH would just love! |
Ladies, please be sure to let me know in you are actually wanting to join the swap...I mean let me know clearly...I'm kinda dense sometimes and I'm just not sure if "sounds like fun" means that you'd like to play....OR...that is just sounds like fun...Thank you!
|
Misty, that would be a fun one to get.
I'm really stuck on what block to do. Still need some time to think. I guess I've found too many great ones, but I can't do them all . . . well, maybe if they weren't due until August! LOL! I've reserved all of Feb. and March to work on these though. Thanks again Patti for setting this up! |
I am started. Count me in for 2 sets. That is 6 blocks per set, right?
|
I was really kidding, but I certainly could applique that block and make it a set. I guess that would be funny in a quilt.
|
Sew cornie....sorry...can't extend until August!!  But, you'll have plenty of time to make up your mind..
Barbara....I listed you for 2 sets on the Group Activity list...when you know the sizes, can you let us know? MistyMarie....I think that block would be hilarious! Give it a go! |
Well, I just finished my first set of 3 inch blocks. Thats right, itty bitty tiny three inch blocks. I made an egg! Hand sewn needle turn applique. You girls better know how much I adore you, since I think I have now gone blind from making itty bitty stitches. I worked on them all day yesterday and this morning when I couldn't sleep. lol.
I just thought in a large quilt, we needed at least one egg! And a tiny block to off set the larger ones. I just hope no one will feel "jipped" that they get a tiny one. Patty, let me know if these it will be ok, especially since an egg isn't a "funky chicken." Thanks!! |
BRT....we need some smaller blocks too! Thats the fun of the thing..getting all sizes. An egg is too a chicken....its just in the making stages
Now, go rest your eyes....we are sooo glad you love us! |

Okay, I will make the chicken block. I don't know what size yet, but I am thinking either a 6 x 6 or a 9 x 9. I am also thinking about doing another set as well. I really want to make a live chicken. I am thinking about a cracking egg with legs...
|
Ok, I'm in! I'll do one set.. and I think I need to make it 9x9 just to make sure that I have enough space to get them centered right. Since they're in a 5x7 hoop, I think 6x6 would leave either a headless or footless chicken....

Glad you are in Tuesy!
Misty....I really like the egg with legs...this is getting cuter and cuter! |
I'm hand sewing some more blocks. I'm not sure of the final size, only the colors I'm using! I am making some hens this time. I'll be making 2 sets. (So, Patty, put me down for 3 sets total.Thank you!)
|
Great BRT! I've put you down. You must be a machine to crank out all these blocks!
|
I am forming my block in my head... I have a question... how do people in the swap feel about having 3D parts? For example, if my chickens' wings were "flappable". Does this mess you all up? Won't hurt my feelings if it does, I'll just move on to the next (15 or 16) ideas I have brewing. I'd rather know now, when I am still fomenting the plan!

As far as hand sewing all 12 chickens, I did three, and then reminded myself how much I like my sewing machine.. lol. I will still embroider by hand all the details, but thought I would cheat for the bigger parts. My fingers thank me...
|
Obviously, the cool kids all do flappable wings!

This idea is cool, but having a hard time finding patterns for a 6x6 block. Kinda tight on money now so I don't want to over do it just yet (wait until I get started.. hehe). If anyone can help me and show me where to get some patterns from that are for beginners then I think I would be able to join. Thanks
Does anyone know if it is ok to use clipart for appliques, or is that illegal? I found something i might be able to do on a free clipart website, but don't want to do something that isn't ok. |
I have done several blocks from on-line clipart. If you are not selling the blocks or printing out the designs for commercial gain, I cannot imagine why it would be a problem. If the clipart is free, then using the clipart for your own personal use is acceptable. (No different from using a free pattern from the internet to make blocks to swap.)
If it helps, I have researched copyright laws regarding on-line material for educational and personal use when I was getting my masters in technology and writing my thesis on cyber-plagarism. If you plan on using it for financial gain, you MUST get permission first. If the site says you cannot use their clipart for other purposes, then you may not. Those are the main stipulations in using clip art. |
Flappable, 3D, embellishments . . . all add to the great funkiness. :-D

Yes!!! Flappable wings are wonderful! The funkier...you know..
cjt....sure hope when you fall off the fence, you fall INTO our chicken house! brooke...you don't have to do a 6 x 6...you know you can do any size as long as its divisable by 3". I use clip art all the time to make applique patterns. The coloring pages make great patterns too. I just look for "free" clip art and since I'm not selling, it is ok, I think. Oh...and I know you won't screw it up...so am I putting you down for a set? |

I'm pretty sure that aI am in, just let me make sure I can get all the stuff that I want. Quick question though... I was thinking about using buttons for the eyes, but wanted to make sure that it would be ok first. I know this is a funky quilt so I figure it would be, but I don't want to do it if it would be an issue for someone. |
I think the buttons will be ok...after all...if they do bother someone, they can take them off and put an eye of some other kind on their project.
Does anyone have a problem with button eyes or any other specific type of embellishment? |
No problem for me!
|
I think buttons are swell.

I was at Jo-Anns today (taking advantage of the 20% of for teachers) and found a great chicken block book. Even though I am probably not going to do a block from it for this swap, I figure I will make this quilt someday. I was hoping to find a Bargello pattern I wanted, but no such luck. Anyway, I am proud of myself for having not purchased any fabric. I did get fusible web and tear-away stabilizer, so I think I will be able to get started on my blocks in the next week or so.

Here's one of my blocks..
Is this something we're looking for as far as funky goes? Zebra Chicken |
Hey! More great minds! I said I was doing animal prints, too!
|
Tuesy...yes! That is a funky one and very cute! The purple makes it pop out too. I'm thinking maybe I'll use a white sashing to pull them all together.....hmmmm...I'll have to see more though
Marie, The Chicken Buffett book is really cute, some of those patterns just crack me up! |
Ok, one more question and then I'm in. What are the rules as far as washing... do I wash the fabric before I make the square, after, or both. I went to the store and think I got the stuff to make the blocks, so I am in unless it totally flops, but I think I can do it. Sorry I have asked so many questions.... first time I have ever heard of a swap muchless done one.
|
Wash before, and you're good.
