I suspect that it was a church sponsored donation for not Downey but likely a local low income community center or a lap quilt for a senior care center. My quilt group does these type of local quilt donations - some tied some machine quilted.

Most likely, Martha Dorcas was a women's circle at the church. Traditionally, women met in groups, called circles, and named themselves after women in the Bible. So, I would be very surprised if it is an actual woman. But because the label was machine embroidered, there probably are women from that circle still attending that church. Please, keep us informed as to what you discover. Thanks for sharing.

label was hand done... hoping for answer to my email on sunday when folks are more likely to be at the church, but i am beginning to thnk folks are right about a sewing circle.
