DHM...what a lay out! I've never seen DJ done that way. Here is a formula from Barbara Brackman for a sampler quilt that might give you some help. This is a 104x104 finished quilt. I'm not sure how to figure your background.
We'll start with the yardage for the 36 sampler blocks, each finishing to 12 inches. If you wanted to use just 5 fabrics I'd buy two yards of each. My theory is that it takes about 10 yards of fabric for a full-bed sized sampler so if you wanted to use 5 different fabrics:
10 divided by 5 = 2 yards each
3 fabrics?
10 divided by 3 = 3-1/3 yards each
10 fabrics for a scrappier look?
10 divided by 10 = 1 yard each
then there are setting blocks that take about 7 yards. Here is the link to her comments so you can see for yourself what I'm talking about.

I think I figured out part of the problem with the yardage. It calculated 33 yards of my background fabric (which is also my sashing and my "negative space" fabric). Clearly 33 yards is the bulk of the 56 total. Well ... that "negative space" in EQ are actually blocks with sashing and cornerstones!! I don't know if I can "delete" the blocks, but if not I can change the color for them to something I don't use (i.e. blue), then calculate the yardage in EQ for JUST the "negative space" and deduct that from the 33 yards. I can then calculate what the "negative space" will be if I piece them in large pieces and ADD that to the EQ yardage for my background color.
With each of those negative space area's being 4" blocks with sashing and corner stones ... and seams for each ... my yardage went through the roof!!!
Right now though I have borders laid out to finally cut to finish my BB. Once they're cut and attached (I need to do the math first and I always do that three times because I suck at math!) then it's off to the LA and I can start my DJ.

DHMom, yes EQ will calculate an 1/8th of a yard for just one small piece (i.e. 3/4 x 2") so I'm not surprised by your outrageous number; now add that to your layout it certainly explains it. And yes--it's a fantastic layout!
Thanks GGal for your BBrackman estimation information..

She's alive and bleeds real blood!
Oh I finished mini's for school and hospital FR's. Forgot to take pics of the school quilts before kids took them in, but here's link to the hospital quilt if you are interested...
