My Mom made hundreds (really!) of lap quilts/wheelchair lap quilts for nursing homes.She belonged to a church group that made them - but I think my Mom did about 75% or more of the sewing. The other ladies would help tie them.

Mom had cats - so some of the people had trouble working on them.

She usually lined them with another layer of fabric instead of batting and did the "birthing" method of constructing them.

I think they were approximately 36 x 45 - so they would not get caught in the wheelchair wheels.

She would make tops - and then wait until she had an appropriate backing (one that coordinated with the front) - rather than put any old thing together. Most of them were very attractive.

Yeah finally took the four I made today to a local Hospice office.. I made two into quilows so that alone was a challenge for me. My town has a few Hospice office here so took them to the nearest one to my home. As a couple of the ladies opened the bag to see the blankets they mentioned names who each blanket could go to. .
Thank you for the challenge otherwise I wouldn't have made any.. By the way my daughter already asked me for one. One of the blankets I donated was one I had started for her but when she saw it she didn't like it because it had pink. I think that one was the prettiest one. Oh and made one for my brothers birthday like one I made to donate..

Thank you, Amalia64, for your thoughtfulness and generosity. I'm sure you've just given some much needed comfort to several people when they need it most.
For myself, I plan to make this an ongoing project from now on.

I'll take the challenge. I have a few quilt tops that I just need to sandwich and quilt. They would be good for my local hospice. Also, I volunteer at the hospice thrift store (Life's Treasurers) every Tuesday afternoon and from now until Dec. 15th at the Christmas store (Christmas Treasurers) every Thursday afternoon. I try to do my part in any way I can.

Thanks, klaws, for being so giving of your talent and time to Hospice. I have a feeling that you understand how important a place Hospice holds for end of life patients who need them. Bless you.

Great idea. 18 months ago my grandma received a crocheted blanket from hospice, and I immediately felt guilty that I hadn't made something for her. She's still in the nursing home (in an out of hospice care, it's so tough), and someone swiped the blanket. I'm going to make her a little lap quilt tonight. She's 97 and not responsive anymore, but I think she'd enjoy telling people that her granddaughter made it.

Since then, I've been thinking about making some to donate to the hospice organization that my family is now affiliated with. I have a nice amount of flannel that will be put to good use.

Thanks for the challenge. I'll post a photo when I'm finished.

Such a good idea! I make prayer quilts and give them to three entities: my church to be taken to people who are ill, housebound (a few are on hospice), and those experiencing loss; to a local nursing home with the understanding they are given out to folks who rarely get visitors or have no family near; and to a group who gives out quilts to the homeless. Some of the nursing home patients are also on hospice. Here are the last three I made:
