Well, I am behind too with finishing one quilt a month. I did finish a quilt in Jan, Feb, and March, but April I started a quilt for my FIL's room in assisted living. I didn't get it done in time, so my DH had it drapped on his coffin. I will count this as my 4th finish this year. Nancy

Emma S 06-09-2013 04:46 AM

Nancy: Lovely quilt. So sorry about you and your familys loss.

SheriR 06-09-2013 04:51 AM

BoJangles, your quilt is really pretty. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm in the process of making quilts for my DMIL for all the grandchildren. I am using her stash. I'm not sure I can bear it if she passes before I finish. She's 89 and should have gone six times in the last four months. It's really difficult for me to cut up her fabric.

carriem 06-09-2013 06:14 AM

Nancy...your quilt turned out very nice. Sorry about the loss of your FIL.

michelleoc 06-09-2013 06:50 AM

BoJangles: I'm sorry for your loss. What a lovely tribute to have the quilt displayed that way!

Foxflower 06-09-2013 02:28 PM

BoJangles...that beautiful quilt shows how loved you FIL was. Now you also have something to honor his memory with from the funeral and beyond.

SheriR....I bet your MIL is glad someone has her stash that treasures it instead of tossing it and wants you to use it.

Foxflower, I washed all her fabric when I brought it home. Here are pictures of how I found so much of it, holes cut in the center. I still feel like I rescued her stash. The last pic is one grandma quilt I finished the top on yesterday. I still need to quilt it. I'm doing them all the same with different sashes and stars. All from Grandmas stash. :D

Fraew 06-09-2013 04:05 PM

Lovely SheriR! Keep it up.

carriem 06-09-2013 04:12 PM

Sheri--great pattern choice to use a variety of fabrics! How many quilts do you have to make from the scraps? (Sorry if you already told us, I missed it.)

Grandma has 6 children and 23 grandchildren. The pattern is from PaintMeJudy's Scrappy Mystery Train. I plan on doing the grandchildrens all in this pattern so nobody will think I picked favorites. The 6 children (5 boys, 1 girl) I think I'll use all her plaids and do a Square in a Square pattern. I'm dedicating the next two months to this project. I need to see how many hubby can take back and show his mom the end of July when he goes to visit.

What a fantastic gift! I don't know if you make quilt labels, but be sure to take the time to make them for these special quilts. It can be as simple as the 8 pointed star with a muslin or white piece for the center square so that you can write the name of the child/gchild, date and "From Mom's(Gma's) Scrap Bag.

Here's a link to help you get started.

Here's the label on the first grandma. All grandmas fabric was stored in her huge fabric closet. All the grand kids knew they were NOT allowed in there! Now they'll have a real Grandma treasure. (I hope lol)

oksewglad 06-09-2013 08:42 PM

Wonderful SheriR! Guess you know how special these quilts will be!!

QuilterMomma 06-10-2013 09:02 AM

Nice touch SheriR
Bojangles, sorry for loss and nice finish. Always touches my heart to see a quilt used as such.

This weekend, I finished up five quilts. Yep, four baby quilts and one churn dash shirt quilt. I don't have photos yet, but I was so excited to get five finishes I just could not help but say something.

Foxflower 06-10-2013 09:51 AM

SheriR -- holes in the middle? How interesting. Yep, you are doing a service for the whole family, so no worries about cutting into the fabric. Save some special pieces for a quilt for yourself...maybe pieces that you like and especially remind you of how special Grandma is.

Emma S 06-10-2013 04:29 PM

QuilterMomma: Wow your on a roll. Congrats on the finishes, can't wait to see pictures.

Cogito 06-11-2013 04:06 AM

Nancy, I sure am sorry to hear about you FIL. What a lovely way to share his quilt with him. Kudos to your hubby for thinking of that.

Here are the photos!!! Not sure if I showed the 70s quilt that I finally finished.

SheriR 06-12-2013 08:37 AM

QM love LOVE them!! Why is the one your "70's" did you start it in the '70's or '70's fabric. Either way I really like it.

BoJangles 06-12-2013 08:59 AM

Sheri, Wow what an undertaking you are on! Such a special gift for those kids! I love your pattern/quilt, and I love your label too!

Quiltermama, all 6 of those quilts are beautiful, but I especially love the bottom right one! Great job!

Thank you all for your kind words after my FIL passed. I still need to do his label, then that quilt will get put up. I think it will eventually go to a grandson. That quilt was a Mystery Quilt. I didn't know what it would look like until it was done, but I was worried as I kept ripping out colors I did not like and replacing them with more of the planes - so the vintage airplanes ended up as 3 of the colors. I was really worried about how that would effect the final pattern, but it actually turned out ok!

Nancy

QuilterMomma 06-12-2013 10:28 AM

I bought that top off Ebay several years ago with the intent of practicing quilting. Well it sat and sat and sat and sat and sat some more till I finally finished it. Yes, it is fabric from the 70s for sure.

carriem 06-12-2013 04:13 PM

QuilterMomma--those are some great quilts!! Keep it up. :)

michelleoc 06-13-2013 08:34 AM

QuilterMomma - wow, you have been busy! They all look terrific.

QuilterMomma 06-13-2013 09:04 AM

I was experiementing on the churn dash a quilt motif and did not like the quilt till I look in the photo and now it is growing on me. The baby quilts are at the church and ready for the next babies to come along. Now to tackle a large project that involves actually marking a quilt top to quilt. Doing a painted wholecloth quilt that has been sitting there for about three years now. Time to get it done! Pray I can get thru it. Has to be at least 30 hours quilting time on the longarm.

Emma S 06-13-2013 01:09 PM

Wow! So productive and lovely finishes. Congrats!

QuilterMomma 06-13-2013 01:35 PM

Thank you ladies. I have one more done but can't post till she gets it in the mail. One of those scrap ufos I cut out a few years ago. Once she gets it, will show that one. It turned out so nice. I think I need to make one for myself.

Here is one I finished last week as well. Linny received it now so can show it.

Emma S 06-14-2013 03:35 PM

Quilter Momma: Your diamond quilt is beautiful. Truly great! Did you hand piece it? Are there as many set-in seams as there appears? Really think diamonds make an extraordinary quilt but think of them as being difficult. Do you know any secrets?

QuilterMomma 06-14-2013 05:23 PM

Yes there are all those set in seams. The blocks to put together were set ins as well. Well worth the effort. All machined pieced. I applied Jinny Beyers techniques and really watched that quarter inch seam on the points.

oksewglad 06-14-2013 09:18 PM

Like this one for sure!!

I'm not able to get one done per month, but I did manage to get this one done just in time for my grandson's graduation last week...twin size. Bonnie Hunter's Double Delight QA back in 2005...top got done.

carriem 06-15-2013 07:15 PM

Vicki--that's a great finish and looks like a happy GS

Fraew 06-15-2013 07:39 PM

Eeeeek VickiM! It's gorgeous! And congratulations.

oksewglad 06-15-2013 11:09 PM

Well that's a great finish, Vicki, and it counts big time.

jillaine 06-16-2013 07:04 AM

(oops, posted to wrong forum) sorry.

michelleoc 06-16-2013 07:14 AM

QuilterMomma and Vicki, your quilts are just gorgeous! Congratulations on the completions.

QuilterMomma 06-17-2013 02:44 PM

Oooooooo, that is awesome Vicki. Like that one. Now do one for my nephew please. It is on my to do list, but none of my UFOs are masculine anymore.

asimplelife 06-17-2013 04:10 PM

Long time with no posts... the end of the school year was very busy and I'm still trying to get into a good routine! And I had a DIY project that really tested me and took way more time than I anticipated when I started stripping wallpaper in my new quilting room in late April. I have no idea how many hours I've spent in that room doing everything but sewing!

Finally the last coat of paint was done late Friday afternoon and I got the room cleaned up and then set it up for sewing on Saturday. And now I am ready to get back to UFO Busting big time! I posted some pictures of my new room in Mission Organization if you want a peak.

QuilterMomma - your quilts are wonderful! I especially like the last one with that intricate diamond pattern. Wow - so pretty!

I need to read back many pages and see all the work you all have done - should have done that before I started typing on Page 91.

asimplelife 06-17-2013 04:33 PM

VickiM - Double Delight is gorgeous... you did a great job with your colors for a perfect guy quilt. I find that to be a challenge myself! I love all of those 9 patches on point.

SheriR - I'm blown away by the project you are undertaking... what a treasure those quilts will be!

BoJangles - I'm so sorry that your FIL didn't get to enjoy that beautiful quilt. I've never seen a quilt on a casket and I think it is just a wonderful tribute. Something to think about...

Missgigglewings - I think Sparkle Stars for Jessie is perfectly named! Such pretty colors and I just love that purple sashing. It sets everything off so nicely.

Emma S. - The quilting on your April UFO looks so great! I really like that layout a lot and the pretty rich colors too.

Michelleoc - I really like how you did the diagonal randomly spaced quilting, it really adds a lot of interest to your quilt. Did you mark the top or use masking tape? I need to try that!

Carriem - Green & purple is one of my favorite color combinations so of course I love Roxanne's Log Cabin! Great job.

I hope I didn't miss anyone since since my last post!
