I am working, albeit slowly, on the dreaded pineapple blocks now. Then it will be time to put the blocks all together. Just wondering if you all waited until the blocks were done to decide on sashing, or did you know what you were going to use from the beginning? My blocks together are looking rather dark, so I am thinking about a lighter cream for sashing.

Anael 01-10-2020 10:02 AM

Love your blocks!! I would audition several fabrics to find out which color would be best for sashings.

I knew I wanted pink so I didn't have a problem picking them.

Teen 01-10-2020 07:26 PM

Beautiful Mkotch....can't wait to see it the completed top. I agree with Anael...audition your options. Lighter sashing will make the individual blocks stand out more and darker would give it a very dramatic look. I could go either way with your colorway. Will look very cool, regardless.

Mkotch 01-22-2020 04:00 AM

I'm taking my Long Time Gone to the long armer tomorrow! I decided on a light cream sashing and think it sets the blocks off very well. I used two plain borders, one cream and one print, because I thought it was busy and dark enough. Will post a photo when it returns in a few weeks. Now I'm working on smaller, less intense projects although I have Kingwell's "Quilt Lovely" book on order. I guess I'm hooked!

Anael 01-22-2020 04:59 AM

Oh that's exciting! Can't wait to see the finished quilt!!
Have fun with the new book. Great projects!! Small ones, large ones....:D :D

Teen 01-22-2020 06:10 PM

Yea, Mkotch! Congrats on finishing your first Kingwell project. Your sashing sounds really pretty to showcase your gorgeous blocks. Can't wait to see it. Enjoy the Quilt Lovely book. I have sticky notes sticking out of mine with the projects I want to sew...lol... I'm thinking of one of the quilts and using Tilda fabrics. I've got 2 FQ bundles of Tilda collections I think would be cool to use on a Kingwell.

This is my next project. I won't finish this one any time soon :D :D :D

Teen 01-30-2020 03:15 PM

Gorgeous, Anael. So happy you spent time quilting that beauty... Deserves to be out and displayed.

Looks like your kitty has other ideas about your next project. Time to make a cat pillow for her. Lol... She's beautiful and very spoiled...

oksewglad 01-30-2020 08:06 PM

I'm looking forward to seeing your completed quilt Mkotch!

And Anael..your quilt is lovely...as I said earlier...bright and clear colors..love them. I think kitty needs to rest and maybe a cuddle or two:hug:

Teen I'm looking up Tilda's fabrics to get an idea of what they are like as I have not heard of her before---oh they are so soft looking without being pale; bright, but not garish! Lovely indeed!

Mkotch 01-31-2020 03:15 AM

Anael, your quilt is gorgeous! I love the colors. Are you planning another JK quilt now?

Anael 01-31-2020 04:54 AM

Thank you all!!

I need to finish some UFO's first before starting something new. I still have some JK quilts I really love and would like to make. I'm quilting another JK UFO right now. My kitty decided to sleep elsewhere :D :D

And the next finish: Long Time Gone. Finished today. No more FMQ'ing for a while, I'm going to sew now.

Teen 02-07-2020 02:03 PM

Gorgeous, Anael!! You are so talented.. FMQ is stunning!

Pearl40 02-08-2020 02:26 PM

Wow. What a wonderful thread this is. I’ve spent several happy hours reading and looking at your beautiful quilts over the past couple of days.

I received LTG pattern this week and have ordered the Quilt Lovely book today. I’m planning to make the Small Wonders pillow first.

Teen 02-08-2020 07:00 PM

Hi, Pearl!!! So glad you found the Kingwell thread... Enjoy the journey and I look forward to seeing all you create... Kingwell is crazy fun stuff...

Anael 02-08-2020 11:12 PM

Hi Pearl! Glad to see you here. Enjoy your Kingwell journey, you will love it! Looking forward to seeing your creations :)

Mkotch 02-09-2020 03:15 AM

Pearl, my Long Time Gone is at the longarmers. Hope to post a finished photo soon. I got my copy of Quilt Lovely last week and have been looking at the patterns over and over. Can't decide what to make first. Welcome!

jmoore 02-09-2020 03:23 AM

Anael, both of your finished quilts are lovely. I may have to think about doing the Baker’s Dozen now that I’m done with LTG.
Mkotch, we can’t wait for pictures of your finished quilt. Welcome to this thread Pearl.

Pearl40 02-09-2020 04:38 AM

Thank you for the welcome.

I look forward to seeing your LTG, Mkotch.

I have plenty of WIPs and UFOs so I'm trying not to start a new project before I've finished a couple, but it's not easy!

Anael 02-09-2020 05:30 AM

Thanks JMoore!

Pearl, that's what I'm trying to do too. Finishing WIPs and UFOs and not starting a new project. I see so many lovely projects I would like to start.......but it's a NO NO!!

oksewglad 02-09-2020 06:35 AM

Love the colors, Anael...and beautifully quilted...it looks so nice on the wall...is that where it will "live"?

Anael 02-09-2020 06:44 AM

Thank OK! Yes, for now it stays up there :)

ILoveToQuilt 02-12-2020 03:30 PM

Will be putting the sections of my LTG together tomorrow to make the top. I have a question for those who have done LTG: Do you put a narrow border between the pieced top and the pieced border? I think I am going to do this to help break up the busyness. Will post photo of finished top when I get it done.

One general question: I notice a lot of the JK patterns call for templates. Are they actually necessary or can the blocks be constructed using other methods? I am not a huge fab of using templates. TIA

Anael 02-12-2020 10:37 PM

About the narrow border: I did not. It's a great idea though. Can't wait to see it!

Regarding the templates: For Bakers Dozen I started without templates but purchased them very early in the process. It's hard cutting those odd shapes without templates. I guess that goes for all the quilts which call for templates.

Bldquilt 02-19-2020 09:43 AM

Hi all.

I'm busy working on My Batik Gypsy.
made from my batik stash.
I'm 2/3 of the way finished on the top. I'd like ideas on how to quilt it.https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dVi...w?usp=drivesdk
I'm trying to upload a photo....

Anael 02-19-2020 01:14 PM

Oh that sounds interesting Bldquilt! Can't wait to see your blocks!!

Pearl40 02-20-2020 08:13 AM

I’m also looking forward to seeing your blocks, Bldquilt, but I can offer no help with uploading pics. I seem to have lost my avatar.

Bldquilt 02-20-2020 09:32 AM

So apparently the photos on my phone are all too large...I will have to go into my computer to fix this.

I can tell you to think very hard if you are thinking about quilting this way. I quilted down the strips, every one and avoided the blocks. Then I went back and quilted the blocks one at a time. The quilt is so colorful and busy, the quilting isn't noticed. If I ever make another one, I will do an all over pattern.

Anael 02-20-2020 01:10 PM

I have to disagree on this one with you Toverly. The quilting is noticed, at least with mine it is. Like you I quilted the strips avoiding the blocks and quilted each block differently. I'm glad I didn't do an all over pattern.

I started quilting another Kingwell quilt. Here's the back

Teen 02-21-2020 02:19 PM

Beautiful, Anael! When I quilted my GTSB it felt like I made the whole thing twice by the time I was done. Lol... You do amazing work on your domestic. So happy you are getting this quilted. Please share when done!!

Nita 02-25-2020 05:31 AM

Anael, everything about your quilts is wonderfully done ... including the FMQ. I used to say that the actual quilting did not matter very much. But the more I delve into the world of quilt-making, the more I realize that the quilting is what makes a quilt come alive.
BTW, Kathy & I have each started our My Small World quilts. I'd love to show everyone my first panel, but am having an awful time trying to post pictures on this new format:(. I still have not been successful in getting my avatar picture attached. Sigh ...
I make no apologies admitting that my computer skills fall short from most ... it is what it is.

Anael 02-25-2020 05:34 AM

Thank you Nita! Yes, without quilting a quilt isn't a quilt, it's just a nice piece of fabric.

How exciting having started My Small World! You can attach pictures to your post by going advanced and click on the paperclip. A new small window will open (like with the old format) and you can upload your pics there. I found out 5 mb doesn't work. You have to resize them. I lost my avatar too but didn't try to upload a new one yet.

ILoveToQuilt 02-25-2020 07:05 PM

Very, very discouraged and disgusted with my Long Time Gone. I've put the top together, narrow border to match sashings (black) and then began to put borders on top and bottom. One side is 2 inches longer than the other!!!! Top measures 62 inches and bottom is 64 inches. All I can think of is so many bias edges that somehow stretched as I put top together. I think it is too much to "fudge". For now, I've put the top away (perhaps forever). One day I may revisit it. I really don't want to rip as I don't know which sections threw off the measurement. Yes, I measured from the center of each side. Grrrr....after all my hard work, too. I just want to cry.

Barb in Louisiana 02-25-2020 09:19 PM

I know you are so disappointed Anita. After that much work, I don't know if I would ever want to touch it again. But I hope you do. If all else fails, figure out how to make a border that hides the variance. As for me, I don't have the patience to do one that complicated but enjoy so much those of you who tackle these wonderful projects.

Now, if I were determined to find out where the errors are, I would take a picture of it, print it out and then start measuring all the parts and pieces and put those measurements on your picture. That should help you find where you may want to make any seam corrections. Or JUST Don't worry about it. Finish it with the variance and be happy that it is DONE.

Anael 02-25-2020 11:00 PM

Oh no Anita!!!!! So sorry! I hope you will try again. I might put a narrow 63 "border. One inch isn't hard to 'fudge'. ...You've worked too hard to put it away, possibly forever.

I do hope you continue with it, Anita, as Long Time Gone is truly a labor of love. I agree with Barb that perhaps scaling the border might work to even it out. I added a plain border to mine rather than a pieced one because it seemed busy enough. You might try putting a plain border on and then a pieced one, varying both a bit to make the quilt come out square.

I am just sewing the binding down on mine and will post a photo soon. I am good for one side a day so I have a couple more days to go!

ILoveToQuilt 02-27-2020 01:05 PM

I am going to rip the borders I have on now and try again. I do have narrow borders on all sides, found out when I added pieced borders that bottom was 2" wider than top (62 inches vs. 64 inches). I am going to see if I can fudge top and bottom with new borders to see if I can take up the difference.

Thanks for commiserating with me. Will keep you posted as to how my session with Jack goes...
