I find it easier, and for me more accurate to set the needle with the regular foot and use the edge to get my quarter inch. The flange tends to move a bit, just enough to mess up the seam.

I like the velcro method, because I can take the leader off and baste my backing to it and the take up roll. Lot easier than all the pins, Then i can just stick the whole thing back on my frame.
