question for employees of Joann's

It is policy with every fabric purchase, each piece must be checked for "forgotten" items. Employees are even tested for this each month. Now the manager going out the back door is very suspicious. No one is to be going out the back door except to throw trash and all employees are required to park in the front of the store at the outer perimeter. Strange. Strange. Strange.

I think checking employees bags does one important thing, it keeps honest employees honest. You would hope that their morals would do that but some people get tempted.
Like most locks and laws they keep the honest, honest. If someone wants to break a law or get into a locked place nothing is going to stop them. It is just a road block.
The say the average car theif can get into a locked car in less than 10 seconds.
Sad, but in today's society that seems to be the way it is. There is always some news story about someone robbing a bank, shoplifting, ect. something they never ever did before but in thier minds desperation, well you know.

As a former employee at Joanns, yes it is company policy. The person checking is a member of store management. Purse and lunch bag must be checked. I am surprised we did not have to turn our pockets out....

I worked at an Antique Mall that had a policy that we had to show the inside of our bags, purses etc. It didn't really work. One gal (I am almost positive) stole sterling and gold charms from locked cases and they were so small that she could stick them anywhere.
Another gal we thought had devised some bag under her skirts to carry things...she was heavy and wore gathered skirts a lot and sometimes walked funny. Now these were never proven, but could have happened.
I know it is sad that companies have to make these tough decisions, but it is part of our reality.

i don't blame them for unfolding fabric as they bag it. if i don't take a cart or basket, i will put small things in the fold of the fabric so i don't drop them, not to steal them. But i usually open the fabric as i set it on the counter to remove them, too.
Theft is a major problem for business. It was 40+ years ago when i worked retail. it's the reason prices are high, to make up for losses.
I knew a couple people that work for a major jeweler. They cannot wear clothes with pockets, have to wear"booties" in the area where jewelry is made so nothing(gems) gets stuck in their shoes. If you don't follow the rules, you don't work there. Period.

JoAnn's policy is for Mgr to check purses and totes before you leave. And, the Mgr's purse/tote is checked before they leave. Most companies have this policy. Can't blame them due to the amount of theft by both employees and customers. We are always finding button cards, fabric boards, pattern pkgs empty and stashed somewhere after the contents are taken.

Is it the policy to search employees as they leave? Do they think the employee is stealing the store in her purse? I do realize that employee theft is a big problem with retailers, but I thought this display was over the top, and in front of customers.
Just wondering,
