Since you're in the south you may not have thought of doing something w/a snowball type pattern. You could use the red and black for the large square, then use the solid black for for corner triangles or vice versa-black large squares and different red/black combos for the corner. I'd draw something out on graph paper & color it both ways whatever I decided

Yes, I am on that Mother/Daughter thing for real this morning. If SHE went out and bought ME fabric, and made the caveat with it when I opened the gift, I would be over the moon ready to get it made for her. I love your sentimentality/love for your little girl (she will always be only that to you, grown up and working in today's stress filled world or not); I understand your feelings completely--and I have customers who share the opinions many have shown on this post. Yes, I fully intend to do it as she wants. She rarely requests anything so specific, but you can bet when she does, I do my best to comply. She is a sweetie; I love my daughter and treasure our relationship so much. Thank you for your post.

How about a scrappy Hunter Star or Anita Arrowhead? Fons and Porter did a red and black scrappy Hunter Star recently on their show and it turned out great. If all the fat quarters are the same, either one of these patterns will still work.

I had the same dilemma only with a little different history. A lady has a son, age 20. She found the "quilt" he started to make in the 9th grade. Two fabrics - a print and a solid. I recut his "squares" to actual squares and just alternated. The print fabric was a southwestern design. The solid was a solid burgundy. Using Solvy I prepared Free Motion Southwestern designs for each of the burgundy blocks. I used a bald eagle for the print blocks. The lady loved it, her son loved it and there were enough blocks left to make a standard size bed pillow plus one block left over that I made into a potholder as a souvenir for the mom. Really turned out well!!
