Congratulations on becoming a Grandmother. Someone has said that "grandchildren are what makes you glad you did not drown your own children."
Pick bright colors. They (whoever they are?) say that babies respond to bright colors first. A kite pattern would use lots of colors and be appropriate for boy or girl.

We just had our first, he was born Nov 16th. You feel like it isn't possible that anyone has ever felt this much love before, huh? He is so amazing. I found Jax's pattern for free at the Moda Bakeshop web site. The patterns are free. I forget the name of the pattern itself but the model was done in pink and browns. It was a square within a square within a square.
    Congatulation!

Such happy news! We're also waiting for our first grandbaby who is due in March. I'll be starting on her quilt next week. You can wait until you know whether to prepare for a girl or boy or you can go with something neutral like nursery rhymes, Noah's Ark, animals, etc. Or you can just go ahead and make one of each :) Congrats!!!

may want to wait til you know boy or girl...the neat baby quilts I've seen have different textures, microfleece, satin, etc for baby to finger and feel.

The first one I did for my grandchildren was an "I Spy". We now have 5 & each one has enjoyed this quilt. It was one I made to keep at my house for them to enjoy when they spent time with us. I enjoyed teaching them to find the different objects on the quilt. When they were a little older we played the matching game. (there are 2 of each on the quilt)
It's a treasure to our famiy because of the fun & hours we have spent enjoying it with them over the years. The oldest will be 9 in March & the youngest turned 1 in Sept.Being a grandparent is the best. Congratulations, now get sewing.
