It depends upon the price. If it isn't on sale, 2-3 yards. If it's on sale, maybe 4-6 yards . . . unless that leaves just a little on the bolt. If there's just a little left, I feel guilty about leaving just enough to entice someone, but not enough to actually use. In that case, I'll buy what's left, in order to spare someone else the heartbreak of not having enough.

Neesie, Funny that you said if there is a little left you buy it. I did the same thing today! I just couldnt imagine not buying that lil bit extra, I mean, what if I NEVER saw this fabric again in another shop? LOL

At least 3 yards, I don't like pieced borders.

I've on a tight budget as husband just (two days ago) found out he will be retiring in December. So yesterday when I saw a gorgeous fading yellow that will be so pretty for adding sunshine to my upcoming sailboat quilt, I only bought one yard!! I've already found the sea fabric now to find the background (a white) and the actual fabric for the boat pieces. It would help if I knew if my next grandchild is going to be a girl or a boy.

Anyway, due to budget constraints, I'm down to 1 yard at a time and even then I must have something in mind

Somewhere from 4 yards to all of it depending on just how awesome the fabric is. I have only done this maybe 2-3x but some fabrics just call to you.

There are colors I always manage to find and other colors that I use a ton of so that makes a difference in how much I buy. 2-3 yards is a good stash amount for me.

I always get at least two, but if I am madly in love with it, I get three or more.

Yep, I do the same thing. I figure 2 yards is good if I really like it, know I'll never see it again, and it's not on sale. And just the other day I finished off two bolts. Who knows, that little bit of extra might come in handy.

I'm Fabric-a-holic..... I agree with Neesie. If it's on sale & it could be a backing too, I will buy everything on the bolt. Most I ever bought was 10 yds...but the price was $2.99/yd & it was good fabric with a wonderful soft feel. My problem is they don't put the blenders on sale for a good price, just the focus fabrics. I HAVE to stop buying all those focus fabrics. haha Don't think that will ever happen.

Seriously, if I had it to do over again, I would probably try to pick out material for each different pattern I wanted to sew. I have soooo much stash that I will never use it in my lifetime. Thank goodness I have a daughter that quilts & she is more than willing to help me use it. Trouble is, she wants my really special stuff. Duh!

Thanks again for all the great advice. I am a new quilter but I have the bug. Really bad! Just today I went to a shop I had never been to; saw some awesome fabric and low and behold I now have another quilt to make. Haha. I need to stay out of the quilting shops and concentrate on the three quilts I now have fabric for. =) This can be dangerous to my pocketbook for sure.
