    I call it a pastime.

A lot of you are using the word "passion" or "obsession", and I agree. Sometimes I feel like a mad scientist who is completely and utterly focused on the task at hand. I put things off, or better yet, ignore things, like housework and meal preparations. I realize that obsessions can be unhealthy, but doesn't it make life more fun?

Yes, quilting is my hobby. "Hobby" is not a derogatory or demeaning word. Now if they said, "your silly hobby," then I'd be a little offended. :) A hobby is simply something that gives you pleasure in your leisure hours, something for which you don't get paid. If you make your quilts to sell, then I would say that quilting is your profession, not your hobby.

But if the word doesn't work for you, then tell people that quilting is your avocation. Avocation is a synonym for hobby, but it has a bit more gravitas. :)

Yep, it's my hobby. Unless you do it for a profession, I can't think any other term you can give it.

I am a crafter, as I do so many different things such as quilting, fine art paintings, jewelry artist, crochet, woodworking, and can say I have done every type of creative craft that is out there. It is not a hobby for me as it is the way I earn my living and doing it for profit.

I don't care for labels but having said that I don't care what people call what I do. I do it for fun and relaxation not for anyone else. If it was my job and I was getting paid to do it I might take exception but life is too short to get bent out of shape over a label!

I am not an artist, nor a professional. I am a hobby quilter. Not everyone is.

It might be a hobby, but for me it is more of a mental therapy! :D :D I can piece and fmq after a stressful day and then feel great! The stress just melts away because I have to focus on what I am doing, so no time to worry about other things.
