I used to work at Quilt in a Day (for almost 6 years, until recently). All fabric is quilt shop "highest quality"--they carry most major manufacturers, not just Benartex!!! Benartex manufactures Eleanor's Fabric lines.

The philosophy behind tearing the fabric, which is what they do at QIAD---tearing the fabric puts the fabric on the straight of the grain. Most fabric is not printed on the straight. They always give you extra fabric, at least 2 inches, so that you can easily square up the fabric to the proper straight of the grain and cut off the torn edges.

She has two websites, one in CA quiltinaday.com
    one in Paducah eleanorburns.com

FYI-Eleanor no longer tears her strips, as she did in her early (20-25 years ago) videos!!!

I've purchased fabric from Eleanor Burns a couple of times. It was excellent quality from a known fabric manufacturer and a great sale price.

Quick service and good email communication.

I think she's especially lovely and very generous with all her free videos and patterns. (But I still wouldn't go to her Block Parties - lol)
I think I'll comment with my order, not to TEAR my fabric. Probably some slack sales assistant.
Thanks for all your help ladies.
Actually, I think it's great when they rip the fabric because then you can easily find the straight grain and not have to rip yourself when you receive the fabric. It's the way I was taught many years ago.

You've gotten some excellent advice. My two cents worth is I have many of her books, but until today I didn't even know there was Eleanor Burns' fabric.

I have ordered from there a couple of times. All of the fabric was good except for one piece, and they had sent me a fabric different from one in my order. I sent a very polite email telling them all the nice things, and then I mentioned the one error. I had a fast response: they were apologetic, checked their stock, and still had the original fabric I had ordered, which was posted to me right away. They said I could keep or donate the other fabric.
I found that to be great service, and I will order from them again.

Her show, on PBS locally, is the only quilting show I can get. Nancy Zieman is sometimes quilting, but often garment construction. Why does cable have 438+ sports channels but no quilt channel?

Anyhow, I have a couple of her books. Log cabin in a day was the very first quilt I made, and it was so well written that I had no problems.

Her story is just amazing and inspirational. How frightening must it be to suddenly be on your own with two small children and no job?? Look at her now - she didn't waste time crying "poor me" or let her situation hold her back. She is a little over the top cheerful, but that's her style and boy, has it served her well!

Ripping the fabric is a good thing to my mind because you're getting the exact yardage you ordered and it's on the straight of grain. So many times I purchase fabric and when I get home find it was rolled catywampus on the bolt and I lose fabric trying to straighten it before I cut.

I've just discovered they have an online shop, "Quilt In A Day" and am eager to purchase some of her fabric, partly as a thank you for all the free videos I have learnt from and partly to develope a nice little stash.

Her prices, at least in Aussie terms are dirt cheap - $3 to $10 a yard.
She has fabulous products!!! Her sister Pat and her design the rulers and patterns together... Our Guild is hosting her sister. Pat Knoechal on Sept 7 here in Warrensburg MO... Introducing their newest book, Radiant Star... all I can say try her out!!
Do any of you ladies shop there? If you do, can you please give me a recommendation?

I want to buy one of her books, some rulers and fabric and am excited - but I'd hate to place a nice order if the fabric isn't very good.

I really appreciate this board's help.
