I commented to the Joann's employee that checked me out at the register (and unfolded and shook every cut of fabric I had) that she made me feel like a thief. She responded that she gets her purse checked too. Tough times we live in.

I worked in retail at Montgomery Ward and they never checked anything. I worked in the sewing machine/vaccuum cleaner dept. It was tied to the electronics dept. where back then they sold 33RPM albums and single 45RPM records. Those things were ALWAYS growing legs.
Years later I worked for a carpet/wallpaper outlet. We sold both...we calculated and ordered wallpaper for customers and also had in stock paper and borders. Jody and I worked together and we spotted someone swiping borders off of one of the racks and putting them in her purse. We were not allowed to approach anyone...had to call for a manager. So one of us called and the manager said...Philip (owner's son) said to just let it go...they didn't want to offend anyone or falsely accuse someone and the store have a "bad reputation". Okay.....whatever then. Never reported anyone again.
Many years ago there was a huge store similar to Walmart called Woolco...that was an anchor store at one of the malls where we lived. Appliances began going missing. This was just before the time when stores were open on Sunday in my area of PA. I don't remember if it was camera survelience or someone checking the store...but there was a truck backed up to the loading dock in the back and these guys were caught loading appliances on the truck. One of them turned out to be one of the town police officers who was working part time security at Woolco. This officer had been with the police dept. for many years. What a scandal that was!!!

Is it the policy to search employees as they leave? Do they think the employee is stealing the store in her purse? I do realize that employee theft is a big problem with retailers, but I thought this display was over the top, and in front of customers.

Yes! I worked at Joanns for many years until a year ago.
I'm surprised they didn't make us take off all our clothes before leaving! lol
Actually I'm surprised they don't have what the airports have for scanning people.

Yes I have seen the same thing happen. It makes me think JoAnn's doesn't trust employees. I think it would be much better to do a random check once in awhile. After I seen that I thought wow - they never trust the employees. Yes employee theft is a big thing, but I honestly beleive most people are honest. This is the reason I would never apply for a position at JoAnns. Makes you wonder if they hover over the employees.

I think it's part of the day we live in. I have been going to the Quilt Festival in Houston for the past 5 years. One year I noticed there were quite a few policemen around so I asked one of them why. I learned that there was a lot of theft that takes place every year. These aren't the employees stealing, it is the customers. I was very disappointed. I guess I have my head in the sand but I thought our group was special and above that.

Jean,
Most stores have bag check policies for their employees whenever they leave the store. It is part of loss prevention. You cannot believe the amount of store products that some employees will walk out with. It is sad but is some situations it saves the company money. And yes i had to do it where I worked. And some other employees got caught.
