A boo boo--I know better

I do measure through the middle three times usually. Short cuts don't work. I guess I had a senior moment there. The quilt is so square I thought it might work out. It was a big reminder that it doesn't. It was explained to me by my walking buddy how to make it fit with mitered corners. I think mitered corners will only be for smaller projects from now on too.

Another thing newbies might want to take note of is: Do not measure the edges of your quilt for borders. Measure through the centers! You can always ease in a bit of stretchiness and get everything nice and square. I mark centers and quarters - eighths if I need to - and ends to make sure that any easing I need to do is evened out. Guess I have good company here. The guest who never leaves as someone mentioned--the seam ripper.

i've had very good luck following pam's directions, given in this tute:

the only difference in the way i do it is less pins and penciling the stitching line. works great.

Your quilt is beautiful! I'm sure you'll be happier once you redo the borders.
I've had good luck doing mine the way Bonnie recommends on her Quiltville site:
http://www.quiltville.com/borderhints.shtml
She doesn't use a measuring tape, she smooths out the quilt, then the borders in the center, pins to anchor and trims them up. Seems to work well for me!

Thanks for being brave and posting the picture. Since I am on tight friendly terms with my seam ripper I take it as time to just sit and feel the fabric. I am proud of you for posting so we can all see and learn what not to do. I am sure your lovely quilt will be beautiful when you finish. Thanks Franie.
