I'm so glad someone asked about using flannel for a quilt. I have yet to make one, but have learned a good many things about working with flannel. Thank you one and all.

I made 2 flanned quilts for Christmas. I used Retayne to stop the fabric bleed. Used Warm and White batting. It stretches terribly even on the grain.

With flannel I suggest you prewash! It could shrink quite a lot if you don"t. I just finished a flannel baby quilt and it turned out great. I got answers on this site for some of my questions.

I would love to make something for DH out of flannel for next fall. He was so enamored of the flannel quilts we saw at a LQS.

So I thought I would ask if there are there any special challenges of working with flannel?

Thanks.

I wash the flannel I sew with to remove some of the fuzz. I also iron it, and spray it with sizing instead of starch. It helps hold the fibers together and helps tame the stretch factor. For flannel, I spray and iron each side. It tends to make a stiff quilt, but a quick wash when I am done, fixes that. Also helps when you try to machine quilt.

I made a rag quilt with unwashed flannel top and backing and "Warm & Natural" batting also not pre-washed. After quilting each rectangle (either 17 X 26 or 21 X 26), I sewed them together with a 1 inch seam allowance on the top. I cut the seam allowance into 1/2 inch wide fringe but a 1/4 inch fringe would have looked better. After washing the finished quilt, the flannel reflects the dimples of the W&M batting. It gave it an interesting effect.

I made a king size blanket. Nothing fancy, both sides flannel from Joanns; the day after Thanksgiving sale. And I did not wash. Used Warm & White cotton batting. It is the warmest blanket I own. It did not shrink very much at all.

My first quilt was a "Square Within a Square" and I did it in flannel, with novelty prints (Superman, SpongeBob, Cars, etc.) for my granddaughter's little brother who was 7 years old. It was REALLY PRETTY and SO BRIGHT. It came out great, even though I was a beginner. I just kept watching the tape of Simply Quilts where they were doing that quilt. THEN, I LEARNED LATER that if you're just starting out, you should stay away from FLANNELS and TRIANGLES.. ha.
