    Default Holidays Celebrated on Monday

I am so old that i remember when Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 - no matter what day of the week it was.

How do you feel about many "holidays" celebrated on a Monday instead of when they used to be?

I am rather surprised that July 4, Christmas Day (December 25), and New Year's Day are still celebrated on the calendar date.

How do you feel about the change?

I think the holidays should be celebrated on their original day. I hate that they have changed Washington's birthday (Feb 22nd) and Lincoln's birthday (Feb 12th) to the generic Presidents Day and it always conveniently on a Monday to give people a long weekend. I'm also surprised they haven't tried to change Fourth of July, Christmas and New Year's.

I'm generally ok with days of remembrance being any day -- the remembering is more important than the when.

People always have a problem with when exactly is Thanksgiving this year, or Easter for that matter. Even worse are the time changes and I am one of the ones rooting for getting rid of daylight savings time, don't care which time they pick -- just pick one and keep to it!

Labor Day is the first Monday of September, and although it bounces around a bit, it is always close to my Birthday and I would celebrate over Labor Day weekend, regardless of where the 5th fell.

I don't mind. We also move our family holiday celebrations to accommodate schedules. If someone is going to remember it will be on any day and probably all days. There are holiday sales all over the place that even purists seem to like. And the religious holidays. Not everyone is that religion.

I understand why they changed it to a Monday so folks that still work can have a 3 day vacation/weekend. But when they started combining presidents's birthdays, that got my goat. They also haven't changed Thanksgiving but give them time, I'm sure they'll find an excuse to change it also.

I don't celebrate any of the holidays myself and my sister will make the special dinner on a Sunday for me, she's so nice to me.

After (almost) 8 years of retirement, it doesn't make much difference to me - but when I was working, a 3-day weekend was a treat.

What bothers me more is the fact that the days are nothing more than an opportunity for sales and parties, with little to no recognition of what the original holiday was for. Presidents' Day (since the ship on separate days to honor them has sailed), Memorial Day, Independence Day/4th of July, Veteran's Day, Labor Day had special meaning behind them, there was a REASON they were national holidays.

I'm with Iceblossom all the way on getting rid of the time changes. Spring forward used to be an easy one for me, but with aging and sleep problems, instead of waking at 5 or 6, I wake at 4 or 5 and try to be very quiet until it's a reasonable time to expect my husband to wake.

Like many families who do not live near one another, we celebrate religious holidays when we can as a family. One daughter is divorced, so those grandchildren alternate years that they are with her on major holidays; the other works in the medical field and the only day she is guaranteed off is Christmas. We remain flexible and honor the holiday in a smaller way, just the 2 of us, often; the family gathering may be a week before or a week after.

So what fun! One of my favorite artists, ZZ Ward, will be playing at the Peoria Blues Fest on Labor Day weekend. I got me a birthday present!!

I used to be more of a stickler for holiday celebrations, and didn't like all the changes. However, as time has gone on, and our family has expanded, we have had to accept that with 2 sons, 2 daughter-in-laws and grands that are almost 23 and 19, something had to give. Luckily, by pure coincidence, both my DIL's happen to come from the same town out of state. They try to time holidays so they and DS's are gone at the same time. I just feel fortunate that we can find time to all be together. Think I draw the line on some changes though. Christmas, and New Year, 4th of July, Halloween, Valentine's and St. Patrick's day should be set in stone!!

I've campaigned every year for our state to drop the time change, I too hope it comes to pass.
We long ago grew out of worrying about holidays, Rob was generally gone anyway, and now we don't celebrate any of them.

I believe post-pagan, Pope Gregory created the religious holidays as they are celebrated now, in the 1500's. so basically a modern construct also. All basically at this point shopping extravangas, which we also don't do, so all none of my business I guess other than opinion shared. Columbus day should hit the bin, he never was in the US area. History twisted to suit.

After the banks failed in 1929 congress eventually passed legislation that they couldn't be closed 4 days in a row and I vaguely recall the Monday holidays switch was so they could get 3 day weekends occassionally, and they threw in for federal and PO workers to sweeten to pot to get it passed. But that could be faulty memory...it's been a long time ago.

I now celebrate every single day as retired person, savor savor savor!

I have lived a long time, and think like many of statements made here. No, I do not changes in holidays or time. Accept, try to get it changed, if possible. Or have to live with it, we cannot go back in time, just forward. I do know many farmers would like to have a time set all year long and not have to change an hour forward or an hour back because of milking cow schedules, and young parents haivng to change their young children schedules.
