My sewing room is in the basement and I love it - I have a cutting counter along one end of the room (30" wide by 12 feet long! what frabulous joy!) and a bathroom just off the room - a tv and radio, laundry room and a phone line down there, and a dehumidifier to run in the summer when it gets hots and sticky - not a lot of natural light but lots of overhead lights and lamps make up for it - and a ceramic tile floor, so it's easy to keep clean. It's warm even in winter since there is a radiator in there, and I can look out the window - I am able to indulge my sewer/quilter/knitter etc. hobbies in my very own girl cave. And I can ignore the world if I don't want to be bothered. What could be better?

And BTW, I agree with Vondae, color your world down there with colors that make YOU happy - my walls are a light purple, my cutting counter and machine table are sage green, most of my furniture is white or sage - I can truly say it is the only room in the house where I ALWAYS smile when I walk in. Make it your own little world and enjoy it!

My sewing room is in a nook, and I have moved furniture and sewing machine table, cutting table, bookcase, dog chair and my stuff so that it is compact for me. I need natural light, so my DH had a solar tube installed to shine sunlight into my little eave. I love my corner of the world, don't need alot of space to sew, don't have a longarm. I iron on my cutting table using a june tailor square up board that is padded and cotton covered. My design wall is a 4 x 8 piece of foam insulation covered with wool batting, and it sits in the office end of the nook. I would try moving around your essentials of sewing and try for different cofigurations. here are pics of my corner of the world.

My "studio" (that sounds so good, doesn't it?!) was recently relocated to my basement from a bedroom. I have two windows and my dh put in strategically placed overhead lighting for me. I have so much room and was able to arrange everything exactly how I wanted it. As another poster mentioned, I smile every time I come down the steps and see my space. I wouldn't change a thing!

Yuck, not the basement, unless you can see the birds, know if it is raining, and in general keep an eye on the world. I have two bedrooms and a library available, upstairs, I am not good with stairs. My quilting room is everywhere on the lower floor or it seems with the open floor plan. I have an expert badge in fabric hiding, but don't look in the entrance way coat closet, the pantry, or bottom of the china cabinet, etc. I sew in the great room in front of the big windows overlooking the national forest.

A friend has a new house and her basement is where she sews. She has her long arm machine set up there, and built a tall work table, so now her back doesn't bother her. They put in lots of great lighting and it's a little piece of heaven. If you have a moisture problem you can set up a dehumidifier. Let us know what you decide to do. Enjoy!

I also took over the basement. Was a finished family room that did not get used much. I had a job that I had to do paperwork every nite so I set up my work space down there then it just evolved into "my" room. I can leave my many unfinished projects out where they remind me to get busy.

I sew in my basement/laundry room. I have no problem with it other than the floor being a little cold (I threw down an area rug to warm my tootsies). It is not the prettiest room (I just posted recently about thinking of reorganizing and painting it) but it works for me, it is out of the way, it has enough space, and it would be essentially wasted space otherwise. No problems for me with light, I have a long bar of flourescents that were already down there and I supplemented it with an Ott light right over my sewing area. When I get around to buying new bulbs for the fixtures, I will get full spectrum lighting and it will be glorious!

I think space is more important than location - if you can't make the space upstairs work well for you, then go for the switcheroo!

My studio is in the basement. I really like it. The hubby has a room to watch tv and play on his computer down there, along with a bathroom and the laundry room. I love my space. I smile everytime I go in there. The floor does get a little cool this time of the year. But, I just wear my fuzzy socks and I am fine.

My sewing area is in the basement as well. I love it. It used to be our family room but now it's mine. There's a sitting area, a bathroom, and lots of space for my quilting stuff. I have 2 windows below grade but they really seem to flood the area with light during the day. I also have lots of lights around the room. I hung some of my quilts to make it feel a little more homey. I have carpet on the floor (because it was a family room). I really haven't noticed much difference in the temperature or humidity.
