I live in southern California and have never had a need for wool blankets here. But I want to make a gift for someone who lives in cold mountain weather. I like the thickness and feel of two layers of Warm and Natural cotton batting, which wool batting should I use to get the same thickness and feel?

i love the hobbes tuscany, but you wouldn't need to double it. it's super warm and wonderful to work with

Hobb' s is great--once you quilt on wool, you might never want anything else!

Is Hobbs Tuscany washable and does it shrink much?

True with the exception of silk!

It is washable and it shrinks about the same as 100% cotton.

I haven't tried silk yet, though I would love to--I'm on a polyester or fleece kind of budget--the wool was a big splurge for me!

my favorite wool battings are Dream Wool & Hobbs Wool .... neither will give you the same *feel* of 2 layers of warm & natural---since warm & natural is very dense/heavy, flat batting. wool battings are lightweight, lofty and wonderful...nothing like warm & natural's heavy, flat properties.

You can also go with a layer of W&N cotton, then a wool batt. I've done this several times and have been pleased with the results. I use (pellon) Legacy Wool. I also wish I could use it on all quilts!

I am using Dream wool for the first time and I love how it is so soft and easy to quilt but will I be able to wash and dry it in the machine? I want my quilts to be used and able to be washed.
