Dianne

Dianne, who has a liking for and a collection of cute little machines brought yet one more for the group to look at. It is a Hamilton Ross. It came with an imitation alligator skin covered wooden case. We have some pictures of it here.

James

James brought and showed us his first try at a quilt, which is coming along quite nicely. He still needs to do the quilting and bind the edges.

James got a small folding travel iron, which he says has a good temperature for what he is doing.

He also brought a machine he recently acquired to show us, a Singer 15-91, made in 1952. He got it for a good price, saying that the shipping for it was more that the price he paid for the machine.

james-dscn1134.jpg

The machine has a broken motor brush retaining screw, which James is trying to remove. The group discussed several ideas for doing that.

Cheryl & Chris

Cheryl and Chris mentioned an American Model 1 sewing machine they acquired last summer. It came up in a conversation about bobbins, as it uses a long shuttle with a very small round bobbin inside. Also mentioned was the Davis VF was a favored machine for most sewing.

Janey

Janey brought plastic holders for VAX cards to any who wanted one for their card.

janey-dscn1100.jpg

Janey also brought several samples of tests she has done on handkerchief edges, using different machines with the attachments. She had done three on a 306 and three on a 221 with feet numbers 120842, 120855 and 161671. It was noted that the cross-wise grain was not as neat as the length-wise grain. She still wants to do samples on a 66 or 99 or 27/28.

Leon

Leon, who is from Kansas, sent us some pictures from one of his recent trips, with the following note:

I won't be able to make it to Perkins, but I have stories and pics for you. Iris, my sis and I got to take our handcranks to a folklife festival again.

We had a good time sharing them and it was the debut for a knock down plywood table that my son built for me.

It was also the first time the cutaway 99 was shared. It wasn't quite happy so it didn't sew, but folks enjoyed seeing it's innards anyway. A vendor who was there remembered us from two years ago and brought a Singer 15 with him. "Was it worth messing with?" I looked it over an assured him it was. Later things got a bit slow so I went to his tent and borrowed it for a few hours. Changed the needle, oiled it like crazy and had it stitching when I handed it back to him.

That was on a Saturday. That evening we got word that my grandchild was about to be born. He was born on the 13th. His name is Atlas. Hehe. I already have a VSM that goes by that name.

In a followup email note Leon said:

Iris is in pink. My sis has the straw hat.

In a third followup note, Leon wrote:

I picked up a treadle FREE rotoscillo VS machine on Saturday.

I dug a lot of fuzz out of it and added a lot of oil. It came with 6 spare bobbins. How great is that? I have it stitching a bit but not up to snuff yet.

I will not stab it into the cabinet yet, if anyone wants more pictures.

In Closing

We want to thank all of our members who took their own pictures and did their own write-ups for posting over the last several months, to keep the group going. It was mentioned at the meeting that the consistency and regularity of our members' interest is what makes it successful. Now that we can meet in person again... no more homework assignments. Yaaay!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time together at this meeting. We intend to meet again next month. And we will post the minutes of that meeting here.

Thank you, Quiltwoman44. I know there are quilt guilds that like minded people can get together. We have really enjoyed our get-togethers. It is so fun to just get together to see and talk with everyone, especially after the last year we have all been through.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

Default August 2021 Colorado Sewing Machine Get Together - Part 1

We met Saturday morning at Perkins for our second in-person get together. We welcomed a new member Thanh, who has an interest in sewing machines, having several in his collection. He brought one to show us, which can be seen below.

Perkins was still not as busy as it used to be, so things are only returning slowly. With empty tables always available and no waiting to get in, it allows us to meet more leisurely without feeling we're overstaying.

At the meeting were Thanh, Dorothy, Courtney, James, Janey and John. Dianne and Leon contributed remotely.

With that said, let's begin our show and tell from the meeting.

Thanh

Thanh, our new member, brought a Baer & Rempel sewing machine, which is German made. The model is called a Phoenix. It is a three-quarter size machine, with a hand crank, and has a low, shallow wooden case under it. It has an accessory compartment on the side.

Thanh also brought several attachments for examination and identification, which several in our group always enjoy.

He had an accessory that came with a letter, in German, of a hemstitcher fork. Pictures of the hemstitcher, the letter and the signature at the bottom are shown below.

There was also an attachment that the group thought was some sort of buttonholer. A picture of it is below.

Courtney

Courtney brought an Elna Lotus SP machine that does straight stitch, zigzag, three step zigzag and blind hem stitches. It has a top carrier for needles, bobbins, a cleaning brush and other accessories. It weighs about twelve pounds, so it is very portable, and Courtney says it is easy to use. Pictures are shown below.

Courtney also brought a book, entitled "Clue In The Patchwork Quilt", by Margaret Sutton. Courtney said it was an interesting story and available for checkout to anyone interested. Janey spoke up right away. She now has the book to read.
