It looks like I have a Singer Sphinx treadle coming my way. The family sent a few pictures, but nowhere do I see a serial number plate, as is usual. Is there any way to date or value this treadle without a serial number? Is there any other place they might find the serial number? It appears to have a drop-in bobbin.

Edited to add: The serial number will be in a range that will tell you when the range was issued. You can estimate the date by looking at the start date, your serial number and when the next series of numbers were issued. It's all a fun, challenging, estimating game. I chose to get a Featherweight with my birth year, as the serial number range, even though I am a December baby, and I know it is probably a year younger than me. "Ha! Ha!"

If it is a "Singer" then you will need a serial number to date it.

I'm wondering if what you may be getting will be a "Modern 'Nostalgia' Model 15’s" as described at the bottom of https://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/15 There is a post about this machine with pictures of one at My New Sewing Machine a Singer 15 NL and the machine and location (under the lip) serial number can be found at My New Sewing Machine a Singer 15 NL Note the knob on the bed at the bottom of the pillar and the shape of the stitch length on the pillar.

There is a 1910 model 15 with Sphinx decals with the serial number on the bed at the base of the pillar at THIS is AMAZING

Here is a 1893 model VS2 or 27 model with Sphinx decals at my new to me singer treadle
Here is a 1925 model 127 model at 1925 Singer Treadle w/Sphinx Decals & Shuttle Bobbin Both of these have the serial number on the bed at the base of the pillar

I have found that only the big red "Reply" button or "Quote" work to give me the paper clip icon to work for adding pictures.

Or simply - Make sure pictures are smaller than 2MB
Click on red "Reply" button
Click on the paper clip icon
Click browse - choose picture/s. (only 5 allowed per post)
Once they show up as being loaded, Scroll over to the right side and click on "Upload"
After the pictures show up as being attached, you can close that window and go back to the screen to finish posting your post.

Thanks to all who responded. It looks to be a Chinese-made clone, rather than a real Singer. I treadle site I belong to reports that on these clones, there is no serial number, and the colors of the decals are much brighter than actual Singers. Too bad! The family decided to keep this, after all.

That is the machine I thought it was. There is a serial number but it is on the underside as seen below.


From what I've read about these machines, they are loud and not as good as the original 15s
