It's kind of funny about the wiring - since most of the machine there will be treadles. However this shed may not always be for treadle sewing machines - and the wires will be there for whatever is needed.

I've been working on putting the hemstitcher table together. I was waiting until after I moved it into the house, and now it's going to stay in the shed so I'm finally doing it.

Cathy, I wish I could head out to help you right now...but would be standing and drooling over the collection, instead of working.
I may have to find a machine or two to haul out your way. I just planted a lovely White in my garden the other night. She is too far gone to work...so now is a plant stand.

a few more progress pictures. I have about 35 more machines to bring out - they will all be on shelves.

I'm still trying to figure how the best way to fit them in. Having the industrials out here is cutting into my room for domestic machines

Industrial stands take up a bunch of room, don’t they? That’s why I bobbed the top off on my industrial treadle “Muttin” stand (Multi-Use Traveling Treadle INdustrial), and why I have two regular power stands that live covered out on the back patio while the machines lounge around inside in the Bike Shop. I keep my Singer 31-15 in the Muttin Treadle in the Bike Shop, and it takes up plenty of room even though it’s been shortened.

You may have to turn part of the Boat Shed into a Sweat Shop to display your industrials.....

Oh, you two got a lot done. Our rain is coming today (and so is the wind!)

It's sure raining and windy today - glad we got most everything moved yesterday.

However, after a lot of thinking, I've found a different spot to move the Hemstitcher and blind hemmer. I've got a row of cabinets behind my long arm - and if I move them upstairs, the two industrials will fit. The good part - it's a straight shot in from the side door on the deck right to where they go. The patcher will stay outside though.

Today I'm hoping we can make some of the display shelves. I need to get the machines off the floor and haul out the rest of the heads that don't have cabinets. I really want to get my longarm accessible! My "send to the longarm" pile is getting rather large, including the neat one that Joe made I'm going to quilt up for him.

Now I need to go find a machine. I have a 77 White and I'm not sure where it ended up. I moved the cabinet yesterday and want to put the machine back in.

This is where the industrials will go - now that I have the HQ instead of the Bailey, there is no reason to keep the 15 here for winding bobbins.



I'm so hoping I can get this mess cleaned out today. I'm anxious to get to quilting!

It may be more of a "mess" right now than you would like, Cathy, but it's the most interesting "mess" I've seen in a long time! The shelves at the end of the long arm are a wonderful idea. If you have vertical space to spare, why couldn't you make a sort of stairs and landings - and each landing holds a treadle that you don't use a lot. Each is a step or two higher than the last one. You would need 6 or 7 feet at the end of a room, 4 feet for the treadle and 2-3 feet for the steps on the side, and you could house machines as high as the room would take. The treadles would open into the stair space when you are actually using them. Does this make sense? And if you designed it right, you would also have plenty of under-stairs storage, custom made for your needs. You could have pegboards or whatever else on the wall by each machine. Talk about handy! OR you could have more machine storage under the stairs. Or room for more machines set up and ready to sew. Whatever you can imagine, you can have. It's easy construction.

Are you sure you need the dishes in there?

Despite all the hard work it takes, this is very exciting. Have you thought how you will decorate it? Why not with items from the time span of the machines, or maybe advertisements for the machines?

Cathy, looking again at the third and fourth pictures on this page, why couldn't you make a U with the walls of the room for the machines you will use the most, and that is your sewing area? Just line the machines up along the wall, either parallel to it or perpendicular, and have a chair with wheels for the inside of the U. You might have enough room to make two skinny U shapes. That would mean making a column of machines down the middle of one big U in order to divide it, and that arrangement would give you a lot of bang for your buck. It would be especially good if you had enough room to have machines back to back down the middle of the U (I guess it would be an E shape at that point.) Am I being clear enough? (I just love designing sewing rooms.)

Cricket - love some of your ideas.

My real Sewing Area is upstairs, and not in any of the pictures I'm showing. I'm not concerned about easy access for use in the Display room.

I've got the layout figured and will have 14 cabinet machines (including the patcher) along with 6 shelves, which will hold about 36 more machines not in cabinets. Some of these are in cases, but most are treadles.

I'm keeping the Singers in the house - I've got room for about 25 heads/cases. I have three singer treadles in the library - will have two in my bedroom, one in my office and one upstairs. I think I can fit six more cabinets (electric) upstairs in the small room, and have two other electric cabinets downstairs. Got three more singer cabinets with machines in the actual sewing room, along with DH's two singers and Necchi (his bernina sits on top of the Singer 101 cabinet and his Viking 21 sits on top of the Necchi cabinet.

I also have the Martha Washington Cabinet upstairs to put my Mom's old machine in, and have three other Singer cabinets that have non-Singers in them (including my main sewing machine).

Today DH will assemble the shelves and hopefully this afternoon I'll move the rest of the machines out of the house. I'm going to have store bought shelves to hold the cases, I've got a lot of them too. I plan on making cloth covers for the machines, but that way I can remove them without taking the machines down. Can't do that if I use the case tops. They will get stored in the work room eventually.

As far as decorating - I plan to hang quilts where ever possible. Nothing real special, just ones I'm making for fun. Will sure cut down on the echos!
