Thanks so much for the VSMS thread and the new thread for cataloging our machines.

Marie M.

Yes it has taken off and I love the photos on there. The only thing I ask is that any and all comments/questions for the machines are brought over here on this side.

And your most welcome but I am not the one that makes this place so great, it is all of you. All I did was open the doors.......

She is an old New Home Ruby. I got her and her treadle cabinet for $5.00. I call her my $5.00 folley. Really sad, but getting there. I also redo cabinets.

Hi, I had never heard of a Ruby sewing machine before. Earlier this morning I saw one for sale on craigslist. I was looking in other cities so I will have to retrack my steps.

What do you know about Ruby's? I would love to learn. Thanks, :-D

Miriam,

Thanks for posting photos of your 401A, 401G, 411G to show the difference on the photo/info thread of vintage machines! Nice to have a comparison. Have you ever treadled the 401G or the 411G? I would give it a whirl! Looks like fun!

I posted some glamor shots of my 401a, 401G and 411G
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-130994-6.htm#3520664
The 401g was my first slant-o-matic. It was a trash rescue. She was in horrid shape. Covered in dog do do, trash and garbage. Nothing worked. She was frozen up everywhere. It took me a year but I got her working. I had to free up a little at a time. First I got her wheel to turn. It took several days of painting on kerosene and finally I tried heat. Then she needed a power cord. I borrowed one off Mom's FW - the motor needed work too. DH worked that over for me. Then the needle would not center and the stitch dial did not move. I worked with kerosene and heat. Then the tension was not working right so I took it apart and re-did it. There were no feet so I stuck one on from an old Necchi - BIG mistake - it was a high shank - threw the needle off timing. I was given a service manual for my BD from DH and then figured out how to do the timing. More futzing around but it now works just fine! She was so abused. Probably could use a bit of paint or something. I bought a cord, attachments and disks for her as well. The 411G was a find on CL. She was abused too. Her needle shaft was bent and her spool holders are broken off and someone muffed the repair job I haven't come up with anything to compensate yet - I wrote up about the needle shaft repair a while back. See page 1169 in case you missed it... The 401 was a garage sale find. She had a broken tension - now also repaired.

I would LOVE to treadle the German machines. You have to have the right balance wheel though. It has to have a belt groove on it - I'd love to find one. The wheels from other machines do not fit the 401 - believe me when I found out you could treadle I started checking that out. I don't know if a groove could be cut or part of one cut off and another welded on or not. It would take more talent than I have for sure.

just picked up a Free #5 in nice treadle cabinet. would that be a verticle feed? out of town and it wont fit in car to come home today so will be couple weeks before i get to play with it. decals r real nice shape and the cabinet needs little work. I AM PUMPED.

Have you just tried to treadle them without switching the balance wheel? I have a 328K that treadles. The manual states for treadle or electric in the instructions ( show treadled foot), looks same type of deal with your machine.

Here is the manual of your Singer 411G in German:http://www.scribd.com/doc/35919972/S...411g-in-German

Just scrolling through and looking at photos, it looks the same deal as mine.

You may have a groove or enough of a groove in the wheel to hold the belt. At first, I thought I didn't have a groove to the wheel. Seems to me they designed these type of machines to do both without having to change wheels- at least the Singer 328K is this way.

Thanks for the manual. Have you tried the chain stitch? The wheel end is long enough but for sure no groove. I wonder if I could have it machined? I have treadle legs I could put one on but no table top at this point. I've wondered about taking a top I have and replace the wobbly legs with the irons - cut holes for the belt.
