I like the 301's!! Now you need to get a few of the two toned machines and you goth all of them covered!! Speaking of I have listed several machines for sale along with a few accessorizes in the sale section and of course more will follow including a few 301's. But I need to get a few more things done around here before I list them.

Now what makes you think it is a Davis? My Free has the same chain lift on the cabinet, so does my National Two Spools? My Davis Vertical Feed uses the flip lid, not the chain lift? I am just curious, I am not doubting you. This machine definitely is the machine pictured on the newspaper article. Nancy Why I think it is a Davis over a National is the body shape of the machine. Look at the shape of your Two Spools versus the Davis. On left side of the machine where the thread gets threaded through for the tension/guide, the shape of the body looks like the Davis. Then on the right, the two bolts looks like the bolts found on the Davis. National Two Spools does have that. Nancy, Please post a picture of the left face plate area so that we can see that area better. I'm curious as to how the thread is guided through. |

To get to the bobbin, I will just remove the needle plate - since there is no slide plate,and it is all one unit! Jon, I am missing part of the bobbin winder on the Hales Crescent! The part that guides the thread! I hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it! Nancy |

I had always just machine quilted with light pressure and still had pucker issues, and mostly SID because of it. Well, that hopping foot is amazing. My husband got tired of me saying, look at this!! when I was first using it and learned to FMQ. I keep threatening to read how I am supposed to FMQ but what I am doing works, so I just keep on going. I guess I cheated on that, because I enlarged some of the pics on the quilts page and just semi-copied them. The last two baby quilts I did, I was so proud-not one broken thread or tangle, just one continuous line of stitching.

There was a company in Cleveland that made cabinets for some Davis' , White's, and possibly Free(?) and National(?). I found one Watertown Davis cabinet (pre 1890)marked by this outfit (T. Kundtz). Not sure who made the later irons but these were also contracted out on the early Davis Watertown machines by Bagley & Sewell. The main giveaway to me that this machine is a Davis is the square needle plate found on their Bottom Feeders. The Nationals like the Franklin and later Minnesota's have a circular needleplate, also the Frees'. There are a few other things that are different but the needle plate is the first thing I look at to see if a machine I've never heard of is made by Davis. Early VS Whites used this square needleplate but look nothing like a Davis. This is my theory and works well for me. BTW, National bought out Davis and then Free bought National all during the 1920's. Jon |

Yes, the 301 does GREAT FMQ. I've spent probably 4 or 5 hours over the last few days FMQ with it and I was very surprised. I knew it was a great piecing machine, but I have a new appreciation of why quilters love this machine so much. Guess what? I came home with another 301 this week. Of course it didn't work, and of course the seller said it did, as they ALWAYS do. You just have to assume it doesn't and refurbish it. The tension is in pieces being cleaned but I'll take pics later!

Nancy, your 319 looks right at home in it's new cabinet. I knew they could be treadled buy not tried it yet.
Am I right in that you would have to take the belt off to change the bobbins? Trish |
