I have a question. Some time ago I read that on Singer machines the motor boss was put on some machines starting in 1901 and by 1903 all of them had them. I know of a machine from 1910, according to the serial number, that does not have a motor boss. The only thing I can think of is that it was a factory refurbished machine and a later serial number was stamped on it. Any thoughts?
Thank you.

I have a model 28 or VS3 from the early 1890's with a boss. Definitely pre common motor usage and for a hand crank.

Here's a pic of my VS3 with the boss which you can sort of see the boss bolt. SN 10562945 (1891). Need a repro crank for this one.

OFF TOPIC - but related....

Last night I was teaching my Armoring Apprentice how to roll an edge in metal and I realized that the metal bit i had just made as a demo looked like it had been fed through a hemmer foot on a sewing machine... so here it is

You know it's an addiction when you start using sewing terms to describe work in other mediums.
