Will be interesting to see photos of the machine. I have seen Singer 99's advertised here on eBay as a 66, the photo clearly shows it as a 99. A 66 manual is often shown in the photo as well. I often wonder if I should contact the person selling to advise of their mistake? A lot of sellers don't know much about Singers, showing only photos of the back of the machine!

I bought a hand crank from the US to convert a 221 FW that had the wiring and motor completely shot, I have to turn the crank very fast to sew, it needs a bigger wheel. Good for sewing fiddly blocks though!

yeah, i'm super confused as to what machine we are talking about here. Its not a 221 if its pre-1930.
    Can you post a picture?

Beautiful machine. I hope you get it running and sew with it. I just went through the process of identifying an old Singer I bought many years ago. I didn't need to call on my machine but here's a link to Singer's website. Their phone# is at the bottom of the page.

    I hope this helps,

Below is the link to the ISMACS website to date Singer sewing machines.

By all means get your new purchase up and treadling.

    That's a full sized machine. It's a 27 with the Sphinx decals.
The machine weighs in at about 30 lbs... out of curiosity, what made you think it was a featherweight?
Ismacs says it's one of 50, 000 with serial number allocated March 27, 1905.[TABLE]

that was my question too - I've found several instances where people think the 99 is a featherweight. Though once you encounter a real FW, you'll realize just how different they are.

Yes, it doesn't resemble the featherweight in any way, either the machine or the name: The 27s are very heavy.

Not a Featherweight, but it is a lovely 27. I would definitely recommend getting a belt and sewing with it; treadling can be very relaxing. Good luck!
