so I have learned! I'll just add the extra 185 to the ones I'm going to part with. So far thats a pink Atlas, the rocketeer 501a, probably the Damascus treadle head, and some newer machines (85 singer and brand new in the box juki)
Jan, your 301 is the same color as mine - at least the one I'm using. I haven't spent much time with the older one. I would guess your black where the paint is worn off is the aluminum base oxidizing. I have cleaned some some black oxidation off aluminum storm doors in the past.

Actually, if you had a white on yours...it was probably aluminum rot. Which is not a good thing. I hope you got all of that off of it by sanding because it comes back under the paint and eats away the aluminum. My long bed 301 had a touch of that that I had to remove some of the paint to get to. I used my Dremmel on it and carefully monitored it to make sure I had gotten it all off.
OMG!! A red Bel Air on shop goodwill. http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewItem...temID=11158125 I know we had the discussion of tell or don't tell, but wow, if someone is hunting red. Looks similar to sewmore, with the indentation for the thread and the badges. Cute!!

Jan, here's a link to what aluminum rot looks like. It's fairly common to see it on 301's and FWs. http://mysewingmachineobsession.blog...aluminum%20rot

I bought a new toy today!!! A Pfaff 60 treadle machine in lovely condition and only 8 miles from my house. I just have to give her a few sips of oil, reinstall her in the cabinet and put the new belt on it(found it in the drawer). Its straight stitch only. The head is very heavy!
Oh my is she pretty!! I'll take pictures once I get her back in her house errr.. cabinet. My first working non-Singer treadle. I found a free manual on the Pfaff Pforum.

Oh shoot:< I took mine off like in the link and then a few days later, it was back on the edges. So I took off a bit more and left it. It's been fine for over a month so I got it all. I'm not going to worry about painting it as it's at the bottom of the machine. But, yes, it's a sneaky devil and if it's not all gone it will lift the paint and continue to do so.
