Brace yourself--you're in for a SHOCKer

Was in Joann today, they have "remerchandised" fabric I bought three months ago and I'm pretty sure they raised the price - glad I bought a lot of my stash earlier this year.
I also will be using more online in-my-pj's buying. When the LQS's aren't making their volumes, the prices will have to drop. The cotton crop argument is temporary, the only reason prices go up in a recession is to cover for the people who aren't buying. Prices on everything should be coming down. Since they aren't, retailers are holding on so that their higher prices now look like the new standard price later.
What concerns me these days is quality product. Joann changed their supplier of FQ's and I'm not jazzed.
I started holding on to old clothes years ago, glad I did.
Is there a forum category for "I Need/I Have" posting?

I told you all this was coming back a few months ago when my friend went to Paducah. It is sad----because I think you guys are right that it will close some LQS---we quilters will survive in that we will do as our predisessors and recyle clothing to make our quilts. For those of us on limited budget, there are lots of 100% cottons in pants, shirts, skirts, etc. in thrift stores and at yard sales. Get what you need and can afford now. Besides, we all have each other and from what I have seen, generosity abounds on this board. Keep the faith---we will make it through this, and the fabric factories will get the message eventually.

They also are easy to work with, use the same kind of shipping as Hancocks and the best part is that they sell all name brands for the cheapest price I have found on the web. The only thing is they don't carry all the latest fabrics, I think they buy leftovers that don't sell but I have found Moda, Robert Kaufman, etc and anything I brought from them was top quality.

This is true I have used sheets before for backing and I found it very hard to hand quilt.
Good idea except I saw someplace not to use sheets because the thread count is too small and the needle going through the fabric, breaks the small threads and makes holes.

I have friends who buy colored sheets for the back, but I haven't tried it yet.
Someone on this board came back from Paducah and said that Mr. Hancock of Hancocks of Paducah had told her that fabric was going up. Ouch!

The reason we lost our textile mills wasn't due to polution, it was due to the NAFTA Agreement President Clinton signed right before he left office. Almost all the textile mills in the South have moved to Mexico.

My friend and I went "quilt shop hopping" today and visited 3 quilt stores in my area. I talked to every one of the owners and asked them about the fabric increase and they all said "what increase?". Most of the fabric is still $6.00 up to $9.00 a yard and that was at one of the newest stores. The others were still very reasonable. One of the owners said that maybe the price increase was at stores in the larger cities. So, either that is the case, or else the price increase hasn't come to Montana yet.
