My Bernina 830 is a pain!

I am stuck with this nightmare, myself. I've had the "new" Bernina 830 for almost 2 years and hate it. I have to say "new" because Bernina named the machine after another machine called the 830, that should have told me right there not to buy a machine from people that stupid. Within the 1st year it had MAJOR surgery twice and it has never worked right. Not just one problem but every problem imaginable. Don't tell me it's the dealer, it's not the dealer, it's a Bernina! I should have known better than to buy one. It is a piece of junk. Every single error message imaginable, whether anything is wrong or not. It takes 3x as long to do anything because of it and there is no such thing as letting the machine stitch on it's own. I've already had to replace all the bobbins once and now the machine won't recognize them again and I need to replace these. It will only embroider out about an inch before I it stops and I have to cancel out an error message and hit the go button again. It comes down on it's own foot breaking needles, the tension is never right, you can only use the most expensive thread, you cannot use mono thread or you will have to take the machine into the dealer. This machine was not ready for market. The dealer has been very good but this machine is not portable and I need it every day, How often can I bring it in?

I feel your pain. My 830 needs to go in the shop yet again as the sensor that reads if the dual feed is in use is now acting up. I think this makes 6 repairs in less than 2 years:< Last time it wasn't covered by warranty and I'm sure I'll be out of pocket this visit too. I'm trying to hold out until it needs the annual service and cleaning. But, that's hard to do when the machine keeps telling me I have the dual feed activated and to switch to a "D" foot.. How many bad sensors do these machines have?? Grrr....

I've never had any bobbin hook issues and really haven't heard that this was a problem on the lists I'm on. Most people seem to have sensor problems, upper threading parts breaking and needle going out of alignment. I wouldn't worry about an 830's bobbin. It's great. It's the rest of the machine that needs help, IMO. LOL.

This is such a shame. I have two older Berninas as well as the 830. I LOVE THEM. I dont enjoy sewing on any other machine as much. I also have Brother Quattro and the Ellissimo GOld (a few others too), but Berninas are my favorite machine and I love the 830. I sure wish you could get the problem resolved because when the machine works as it was built to, it is amazing.

I found out what was wrong with my Bernina all along. It likes cones. I bought a cone of Gutermann thread and now it doesn't break ever. So I bought some more cones and it works like a dream. I'm loving my Bernina and sewing on it all the time. No problems anymore, except the one foot it won't take. But I kept theirs. Mine works, but it's open toed and it won't do the button hole stitch on it. It'll do every other stitch. So I kept theirs, which was plastic and finally broke and had to buy a new one. So, I love my Bernina now. Couldn't live without it. And all that was wrong with it was it likes the big ole cones! And I like using them better anyway. I don't run out of thread!! I wrote this post a long time ago and every once in a while it pops up in the new posts. Why? How does someone find an old post and bring it back to life? And why would they want to?

They might be doing a search for "Bernina 830" and this is one of the threads that comes up.
I am really surprised at how many problems this model (the new 830) has had. I would have been extremely disappointed with the machine! ( I have one from 1962 - and it's still behaving itself!)

Well, my 830 will be three years old next week and was put on the boat today. After being replaced at 6 mos. of age, the replacement has been in the shop more than I used it. Thankfully I have my Brothers to fall back on. I have had problems with threading, bobbin & top thread sensors ,fatal error messages and every other kind of message available. Two pc boards have been replaced, one two weeks ago and memory loss problems with 20 minutes of getting it home. I documented the entire sceniro in writing, packed up the machine in the original box and gave it to my dealer. The machine is now on its way back to Bernina. I requested a complete break down of parts and reconstruction with parts not made in China. I have been advised by my dealer that Bernina is not going to sell the 830 any further do to excessive problems. They are not "recalling" them but will make a deal for you to trade to the new 700 series. Allegedly the machine has a better threading system, bobbin, sensors etc. You will lose about 2" of embroidery space off the mega hoop, but I don't know what else you will have to give up. My concern is who made the parts and what assurance is out there that you won't have the same problems. The 700 series is still in the $7-K range. Have to see what I get back..
