I got talked into a Bro. PE770D. I had nothing but prob. and I still don't like it. $750. It may be the operator.
I would def. recommend a 5 x 7 or larger hoop. Get the right kind of thread, stableizer, and some instructions (not just the manuals). I don't think it is good idea, unless you have a lot of money, to go with a very expensive machine at first. You can always upgrade later if you want to.

I have a Deco 600 got it at our Bernina store. Does a 4 x 4 field also have a larger hoop so that you can do a second or continous design without rehooping. Works beautifully also lots of designs and the Magic Box which converts designs to the computerized reader card. Selling it for $175.00. I recently did get a larger 5 x7 machine. Would like to sell it and have someone else enjoy it as a starter. PM me if interested..

It depends on what and how much you are going to embroider. My first emb machine was a 300E. If your aim is
to do occasional emb it will be a great machine. However, if
you intend to do a lot of shirts or hats for hire it will be very
time consuming. Do make sure you price the software as well as the machine. THat price seems high without any soft
ware. I currently have a brother 6 needle, use it daily and love it.

I have a Bernina 180 w/embroidery attachment and many feet and extras, like a multi-thread spool holder that attaches to machine. I have had trouble my serviceman fixing the timing, and I have given up. As there isn't another Bernina serviceman in area, I just want to sell machine. Anyhow, I can probably undercut any deal you are offered even with shipping cost.

I have all Brother Embroidery machines. I started out with the 8500 and then bought the 400D because of the Pooh Disney designs and could use Disney cards and now have the Innovis 1500D, which I love. I started embroidering in 2000. Love all my machines.

From personal experience, I would look for one with a UBS port and a larger sewing field than 4 x 4. You can download soooo many more designs that way. You have to buy the cards and transfer equipment to transfer otherwise.
I have a Brother PE770 and an Bernina 640 both wiht USB ports.
