I also acquired another Singer 401a with issues. DD, now officially an enabler, spotted it. First it was missing the foot control & cord. It's rubber boots on the bottom were very much in need of replacement - she was setting on the screws and remnants of the little boots. She needed new spindles/felts & a bobbin tire. I rarely find one with the cam stack working correctly - even if it does work ok, I take it apart and clean the whole thing thoroughly. It moves a lot smoother. The gears were full of black grit. I cleaned them up and pulled a LOT of lint out of the bobbin/feed dog area. I thoroughly cleaned up the zigzag pins - I'm not sure what they are called but if they gum up the machine sure won't zigzag right. The machine body was pretty dirty so I polished her up. She is a good one. At least she came with a pretty good kit - I've had to spend a bundle on some machines just to get a kit. Then I spent some time sewing with it. WOW. I'm always amazed when I try something new. I now have a walking foot for the slants. I started making a mat for my 3 way table. DH has painted the legs and box black. I zigzagged around the edges of a piece of teflon quilted stuff. It is heavy and seems to stay put. I was thinking I would put just some bias tape or something around the edges and be done with it. At least if it slides off I won't be as mad as I would be if it didn't work... I pieced together a quilt a few years ago and never finished it. So I need that pad. Well, in the mean time we got a different bed and it won't fit. I'll have to decide what to do with it. My sister says if I can get it to her by the end of September she will quilt it for me on her doo-hicky quilter thingy for Christmas. I've never had one done like that - all mine have been tied.

Is this event held every year? I would love to attend! I live in the UP so it wouldn't be hard to get there!![/quote] jan on 446
Jan, it's the first Saturday in September every year, but I think the one in McBain that is still coming up is just as nice. How far are you from the bridge? I'm 125 miles, but McBain would be a little closer if you come down 75. I can let you know the date when I find it. The quilt shop should know.

If you look in the cabinet can you tell me what the metal parts are on the front right of the inside of the cabinet.
Got 301A a month ago and don't really know what that is.

Am I out of my mind? Nah, nevermind, this is the wrong place to ask this. You don't ask enablers if you should get another machine. I answered an ad on Freecycle tonight and tomorrow will be receiving a black Singer treadle. The young couple will deliver if they can get in their car. If not, I have to take a screwdriver and go a bit North. The only machine I want is a Redeye and this not one. She said it has some worn gold flowers. It needs a belt, but the Leader came with a spare, so I'm good there. I'm very curious to say the least. She has dial-up and couldn't get a picture to me before her husband goes on the road for the week, so I'm flying blind here. Now where is it going to sit? Which piece of furniture can I sacrifice? What if my son was able to get the Redeye in NJ? I can't decide if he will call me excited or hide it until Christmas as he can't get home until December.

Let it soak in by putting machine on side and try again the next day.

Our friend, Loretta, came with me and she ended up buying the most pristine Spartan, that was modified to a handcrank, I have ever seen! Not a scratch on that machine. She also got a buttonholer, ruffler, and some bobbins! I would have bought that Spartan if Loretta hadn't! Monica demonstrated her machine dust covers and did a fantastic job! There were tons of machines to oogle over, lots of food, demo's on attachments, lot's of conversions from motors to handcranks going on - a good time. I was drooling over a W&W #9 hand crank and a Jones hand crank!
