We go camping in Yosemite quite often and bears are a a fact of life and it never ceases to amaze me how people leave food in their cars or out at the campsite. We have seen people try to pet the bears. You have to put anything that has the smell of anything into a bear box. They rip doors off cars, tear into tents, and a cooler is no match for a bear of any size.

My parents honeymooned at Yellowstone in 1959, and witnessed a woman who brought honey to Yellowstone in order to get photos of a bear licking honey off of her children. Yup, that was her primary reason for visiting Yellowstone. She had smeared her children with honey, and was directing them toward a mother bear with cubs on the side of the road when my parents became aware of what was happening. Several people stepped in, and put a stop to it. Others drove to the nearest ranger station to report her. I don't know what happened after that, but I hope she lost custody of those kids!

We had a bear in our yard last week. My German Shepherd was in the yard at the same time, and stood her ground. Both animals were growling at each other and the bear finally ambled off. This very large black bear has been around our town for a couple of years now. She also likes to get into the bird feeders and trash barrels. She dragged one of my barrels about 25 feet into the woods and tore apart the trash bags. The food she liked the best: a nearly empty jar of Herhsey's chocolate spread (think Nutela) - there was nothing left but the plastic! She was not a vegetarian, as she left the remains of a green salad and some corn nibblets.
