Yes, very true, and they are also used for bait for dog fighting, as others have mentioned.

My baby only goes out when I watch her - the fence is there to keep her from wandering away. She's fairly deaf now and doesn't hear us call anymore. Also I watch my dd Pom and she looks very tasty to the hawks even when we are right there - plus she has no idea of boundaries without it. The neighbor has an electric fence, but they don't prevent other bigger dogs from wandering in.

I live about 35 miles from St.Louis and since we heard of these "dognappings" we have put two locks on the gates and when we let our 2 bostons out we either stay at the door or go outside with them. We never leave them outside alone. When they are walked they are on a leash built for two so one can't go in one direction and one in another.

Would you leave a three year old outside without supervision? The worst can happen. Be careful with your loved ones.

I have the opposite problem, people who no longer want their pets, bring them out to these old country roads and just
drop them off!! sad!!!! I'd like to see a thief try to take my shephard!!!!

We have hawks and eagles trying to catch my neighbors two little dog's. We have a problem in this area of homes being broke into just to steal their dog's to be sold.

One thing my husband has done. Since dogs (some) like to dig, he attached chicken wire to the bottom of the fences and used tie-downs like tent stakes to hold the wire down. then he attached the other part to the fence. You can't see it because he let the grass grow around it. The fences don't belong to us but we're the ones holding them up. Gotta watch some utilitiy guys too. One let our dog out and he was killed 2 miles away. Went up the off ramp and hit by car, killed instantly. Buddy had not been out of the back yard for 12 years. he was deaf. Vet said he probably took off after smelling my car and tried to follow.

This has been in the news around here lately. I guess it's true.

This happens in our area, too. Another thing to think about is leaving dogs in parked cars. Our veterinarian warned us that dogs are being stolen that way, too. They don't need to be purebred, just someones loved pet. The thieves watch for ads with big rewards and then claim they "found" the dog! We never leave our dog in the car, not even for a few minutes. One of us stays with her. One more stress in our current society, what a sad commentary. I am glad we are all seeing this thread as it is so important.
