If you have storage for these items, stock up to ride out the increase. These items have decades long shelf life. Whole coffee beans last for years. It may seem alike a long time away but it will increase to that high point starting this year. It may not happen but doesn't hurt to be prepared if you can for any items that contain these food you enjoy.

I also agree with this practice...it should also be done in every aspect of our lives as best as we can.

Have you seen those tomato plants advertised on TV - the ones that will harvest 60 lbs (?) of tomatoes?? I am so tempted to try, but then again it's the "if it's looks too good to be true, it probably isn't" rule. We're moving to NC in a month,
so I won't be planting a real garden this year (so sad!!) as we'll
be in a rental for 6 months.

Has anyone tried these wonder plants???

The whole neighborhood is planting this year.
you should buy Heirloom seeds for heirloom plants for seed saving..and if the WHOLE neighborhood is planting...be careful and mindful of WHAT they are planting..their Hybrids could be pollinating your heirlooms..and so it goes, that you do not know what you are eating...

the closer you are to your neighbors, the bigger the feast for the bugs as well....

save your money...if it were TRUE we would see them in the farming magazines....and you don't....you might in those shady seed/flower catalogs, but not in Urban farming, mother earth news, etc...

Doing all of the above ...and more. Here in NE the snow is still on the ground and the rule is don't plant outside until Memorial Day. Have bought buckets and going to the best nursery around to have them filled with good soil and start a garden this year. Remember water...even if you have a well....if elect. goes out you got more problems. Found a good site for info is Off The Grid. Advise and sell products.Mormons (not one) are a good source of (nitrogen sealed)stored food. Shelf life can be up to 25 yrs. Son (WA) will be OK but I am concerned for DD,SIL and GKids. We are preparing to help them.

My dad always picked the first blossoms off the plants so the plants would get big and strong, and yes, we had huge yummy tomatoes.

    Good Luck

Just canned chicken breasts, caught a big sale $.99 per pound. Just shove them down into sterilized jars add 1 Tsp. sea or kosher salt put the lids on not tight and put into
pressure canner for 70 mins. The chicken is so delicious when you use it, it is amazing. I do Stew, chili, spaghetti sauce, beef chunks for pulled beef sandwiches, pork chunks. Much better than filling your freezer and then the electric goes out and........ Also, you can make incredible jams and preserves. Right now I get 2 huge containers of strawberries for $3.99 makes 10 Pints + of strawberry jam. Buy unsweetened Concord Grape juice and make grape jelly NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP so it tastes like grandmas's.

Oh yes, and don't forget the pet food...many consist of corn , grain and veggies as fillers. Look for sale on those too. Good rule of thumb is when you finish one (of anything) buy replacement or perhaps 2. Check shelf life on container. Many are now dated to 2013. First in, first out. DelMonte canned veggies were on special this week at 80 cent/can in the supermarket....2-5 cents lower than BJ's.
Watch your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.

At what pressure do you cook the chicken and also are these bone in breasts or skinless? Any water in the jars? I have canned venison many times, but have always browned it in pan then put it hot into jars with alittle juice seal jars and cook at 11# of pressure for 70 min. Taste like tenderloin tips.

    Thanks

Coffee prices have already gone way up and getting higher. we drink a lot of coffee so I always stay stocked up. Walmart prices around here seem to be much higher than other stores on food prices so I dont buy much there any more. Also I heard on the news that walmart is going to be opening a bunch of smaller stores to compete with the dollar stores since they are losing business to them. They claim its because people dont want to go in their bigger stores to get a few items but I think its also because dollar stors are cheaper on cleaning goods and just about everthing else they sell.
