I feel so very sorry for these people. But I don't understand how there were so many fatalities. Has anyone heard where these fatalities occurred. If the majority of them were in the housing areas, do they not have basements? I know that I read on here that 4 were killed in the hospital. How in the world do you move that many patients to safety in such a short amount of time? I sure hope that these violent storms end soon.

Most of the homes there do not have basements.Joplin is not a real big town. A lot of older towns in Mo. did not have basements. Our town has very few,and we dont even have a "real" siren. If a tornado is spotted, the emergency vehicles drive through the streets with top mounted sirens. Very scary stuff!!

I'm at a loss for words. All this devastation is so sad. I pray that all the victims may feel God's love and protection as they rebuild their lives.

I live in Springfield, about 60 miles east of Joplin. The damage in Joplin is horrible!! An entire hospital had to be evacuated. Some of the patients have been transferred to our hospitals here, along with injured tornado victims. It is again raining and storming in this area. When will it end??
I'm praying for all in this area to make it through another day.

I've been checking out the weather channel reports as I am from the Springfield area and used to work for the St. John's Health system. A lot of folks stay in their vehicles and try to outrun or "outfigure" the tornadoes and storms to get home or away from them.. some of the casualties were found in cars. It seems that no matter how well educated we are about what to do folks will lose their common sense when the actual event hits. They are saying that x-rays from the hospital and other paperwork is being found in Springfield.. 60-70 miles away. If this was truly an F-4 tornado as the speculation seems to be running that is a storm of great magnitude and it stayed on the ground for a LONG time. Prayers for more survivors going out.. but with that kind of storm I'm amazed that the numbers aren't higher.

Rescue efforts in Joplin were hampered this a.m. by more thunderstorms with hail. Although severe weather had been forecasted for the area, sirens only gave about a 20 minute warning. Everyone PLEASE take these warnings seriously!
