When I worked at Wallyworld, I got suspended for a day because of giving $10.00 back too much. I had close the cash register and count to make sure. Was put on probation for a week after I came back. Come to find out the person I gave too much to brought back the extra. I had a stack of brand new bills and one stuck to the other. They also did another background check to make sure they didn't overlook anything. So I not only lost 8 hours pay and of course had to repay the $10.00 and never got reimbursed after the money was brought back. So absolutely give the money back. They also make note in the employee file that the employees cash draw came short on occasion. That makes it sound like it happened a lot. I would try to return it ASAP before the employees shift was over. I couldn't live with myself. it isn't the recipient's money.

Wow, some of you took this personally, It was a question my dh and I came up with, to see what others would do. I'm glad we have an honest bunch here. It's a shame that they are cutting back at schools.
Counting change was taught to me in 2nd grade at Catholic school. Home ec. should be teaching kids about balancing books and such. but there's too many cut backs nowadays. it is home economics after all. and no blame to those teachers either. it's the system. kids don't need to know how to 'count back change' the machine tells them how much. it's a shame. but please. this was only a hypothetical question.

I would take it back. That is the only way it should be done. I don't want anything if it doesn't belong to me, money or anything else.

I would also give it back. I had walked out of Walmart without paying for something because the girl and I didn't see it in my cart it was under my hoodie. All of about $3 and I took it back in and paid for it Not worth the bad karma

I had that happen - a clerk kept giving me change for a hundred and she was supposed to take a roll of stamps off of the $100.00, she already gave me the stamps, I tried to explain to her she was giving me too much, she told me no she hadn't and tried to give me another $20.00 bill. I took the stamps out and showed them to her, she still didn't understand. So I laid everything on the counter and took my $100.00 bill. I then asked her to give me 5 $20.00 bills, which she did. Then I asked to purchase a roll of stamps, I think they were $42.00 at the time. I then gave 3 $20.00 bills and asked for my change, she gave it to me - then I pointed to the excess money and she turned white as a ghost, and just kept thanking me. I guess she was having a bad day. I used to be a clerk, my conscience wouldn't let me take the extra money.
