I ws going to suggest BB&Beyond. We repainted our living room and went there. our window is a double had coupons and still spent about $150.00. For our bedroom we did Walmart. Th curtains/drapes from BBB were lined to keep the rooms comfortable all year long. The other rooms I used inexpensive flat sheets from the dollar discount stores. $40. a room. easy to wash.

If she was in uk I would send her to Dunelm shop to look at prices and sizes of ready made curtains with linings to give a clue as to cost. These curtains are usually on sale at big reductions but still come with £50 to £200 per pair. They also do matching cushions.

When I was young, I found a very cheap bolt of muslin and made curtains for an apt. Just curtains, not drapes. I mention the age, because I laid out each curtain and used stencils to add a pattern in colors for each room.
I remember that project fondly, it was early days in our relationship, and we did not have money to spend on anything fancy, and I was so proud of those curtains.
However, they did not wash well, so did not survive the move. It was a lot of crawling on the floor to do the stencils. Last time we needed curtains we went to Ikea, had meatballs and laughed about our more mature version of curtain creation. Another fond memory, but a lot less work!

tell her to download a fabric calculator and calculate how much she'll need. Get her to compare prices with inexpensive curtains from any of the above-mentioned stores and go from there. Even thrift stores can offer great finds.

Is she asking you to make them or do them herself? That's the big question.

Give your opinion, offer suggestions for buying (Bed Bath & Beyond, Crate & Barrel, Potery Barn), then be quiet and let her make the curtains. She needs to learn by experience just like we did.

It is Too expensive to make drapes. Walmart, Kohls, JC Penney, all sell drapes. Bed Bath &Beyond too. I use Site To Store on the Walmart website. You can shop online and either have it shipped to your house (shipping charges apply) OR have the order delivered to your local Walmart for pick-up. I recently ordered a great patio cart this way. Very convenient!

Nah, not making drapes esp for that many windows.

Last fall I wanted to replace the "starter" drapes (cheap!) in my 5 tall farmhouse windows. I priced drapes at JC Penney expecting to pay $100/window. The great salesgal pointed out some very nice Martha Stewart drapes in my desired color, being closed out at $25/window! She was able to locate enough in my size by looking at the inventory in the system and shipping them to my house. So happy! JC Penny has always had a great selection of blinds, drapes, linens, etc. Give them a try and also engage the salespeople for assistance. They used to have interior designers on staff. Not sure if they do now but I once lived next door to one of them.

This may be a project that she will enjoy, whether or not it turns out to be cheaper than buying them ready made, and she will probably wind up with better quality than she would get elsewhere. If she moves, the curtains can be altered, or maybe the landlord will buy them for the next tenant.
To get the 84" length you will have to cut them lengthwise on the bolt. Quilting fabric is not a great option for use for drapes. Too lightwieght. Too much ironing. I did this for my bedroom. Never again. They always looked unkempt because I hated to iron them. And I used top of the line quilt fabric to match my quilt, shams and bed ruffle that I made. Too expensive too. After five years I took them down and replaced them with heavier, light blocking ones. They also keep the room warmer during bitter cold winter nights.

Sorry for all of the posts. I just went through replacing drapes for SEVEN floor to ceiling farmhouse windows (84" length). Two were in the bedroom. I purchased the Eclipse light blocking drapes from Kohls (walmart carries them too) for the bedroom. Toss them in in a light heat dryer and a dampened hand towel to get the folds out. Works like a charm!

I had 4 very large windows in my living room to cover and didn't want to do the whole drape thing. I went to Menards and bought painters drop cloths. They certainly aren't a formal look but they are big enough to cover a window and they are cheap. Check out pinterest for ideas on painter drop cloths.
