Who Understands Algebra?

I found Algebra, Trig, and Calculus all easy. I had a great Algebra teacher (plus my Dad, who also taught me Trig and still remembers it 30 years later without opening a book) and after that, calc was easy.
Here's the thing with algebra-the MOST important thing you have to learn is how to set up the problem. After that, you're good to go, just don't make any silly basic math mistakes. And PRACTICE all you can! It's really fun, it's hands on, and I just loved it. Wish I had been a math major.
Best wishes! You CAN do it!!!!!!! And congrats on going back to school!

When I had to take the GRE to get into grad school and then the PRAXIS to prove I could teach (we won't go there...), I used a book called Math Smart to help me with everything from fractions to algebra.
I've included a link:
http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Princeto...8147741&sr=1-5
I would offer to send you my copy, but I loaned it out to someone and it didn't get returned (and I can't remember who I loaned it to).
I'm sure the public library either has a copy or can get it from another library if you don't want to buy it.

Look at http://www.songsforteaching.com/
There are songs on there for many advanced math concepts. You can read the lyrics, listen for free or buy a download.
This site looks like it might have lots of neat teaching songs for any of you teachers out there looking for a new way to get student's attention.

It's much easier to refresh on the basics before attempting the actual algebra. It does take longer to complete the math requirements though.
Good luck in school, I have found that it is much harder now than when I was younger (but I am enjoying it much more). I don't seem to be able to concentrate or retain info as easily as I used to. I worked hard my first semester but I achieved a 4.0 average and made the dean's list - top 6% of the class!

Good for you, and congratulations on that 4.0!
I agree, it's wise and helpful to review the basics first. Without that, you'll only struggle in algebra.
Now, as for concentration, were you really more focused as a teen? Really? And retaining things, it may seem more effortful because you've forgotten that schoolkids usually need to read the material several times, do homework to practice what they've learned and then quiz themselves. Most of us never learned something fully in one sitting. And college is different, because you don't have nightly homework, which rehearses the knowledge.

That works too. My daughter is a math geek!!! she has a journal that she uses in her spare time to work algorithms, I have no idea where she came from. She is a brainiac, unlike her mother who has better things to do than to sit around figuring math problems. If she isn't doing math she's reading. I know that quilting has a ton of math in it but I try to avoid it as much as possible. If I have to think about measurements and figure out sizes that is not the project for me. I am an eyeballer. I look at it, if it looks good to me then I am perfectly fine with it. Although, I do have a tendency to waste some fabric but I think about that when I am purchasing it, I just buy more than I need that way I am covered.

Kudos to all of you that are going back to school, I think it is a great thing. I have 12 hours to finish my degree but I educate my son during the day and the classes that I need to finish up are during the day too. He has four more years until he graduates. He is priority for the time being and then I hope to finish up. The good thing about home schooling is that I have had the opportunity to do it all again. I appreciate the knowledge now. I actually hire the advance math out for him. I have only had algebra 1 and it was several years ago so hubby gets that job if Nathan needs help. He also has a dvd that helps him through it. Good Luck to all of you. It is very cool and you can never go wrong with educating yourself.
